We hop into a pickup bed filled with sandy, damp life jackets, and they bump against our shins on the dirt road to the beach. Melissa and I are headed to Mosquito Bay in Vieques, one of most dense bioluminescent bays in the world.
It’s teeming with microscopic organisms that light up when they’re disturbed. There are only eleven “biobays” in the world, nine of which are in Puerto Rico. Ricky, one of the guides, is riding in back with us. He says his job never gets old. He tells us about raindrops that seem to spark as they hit the water, how schools of fish leave light streams in their wake. We arrive at the beach, and don our gritty life jackets. The air is suddenly spiky. We wade into the water to escape while our guides ready the kayaks. I’ve adventurously stuffed all my camera equipment into plastic trash bags inside my backpack. We paddle out to the bay and tie the kayaks together to wait for nightfall. As it turns out, our guide was right about the photos. Johnny Isakson, a Republican from Georgia (and a former real estate professional) has introduced legislation that would beef up the tax credit for first-time home buyers. Under the terms of his bill, which was introduced Wednesday, the size of the credit would expand to a maximum of $15,000 from the previous cap of $8,000, and it could be taken by anyone who buys a primary residence, instead of only by first-time home buyers. The bill would also remove the income limits that had prevented individuals making more than $75,000 a year from claiming the credit, which would be available for a year after the date of the bill's enactment. [See First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit: 6 Things to Know] Isakson played a crucial role in establishing the $8,000 tax credit and believes it has been successful in bringing first-time home buyers into the market. He was also online for a live chat to discuss the book and other aspects of drug policy. For info on events and reviews, see the Facebook page or follow him on Twitter. One day in the fall of 2001, I realized that I hadn't seen any LSD in an awfully long time. I was living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland at the time, where the drug had been a fixture of my social scene since the early-nineties. Because most acid users don't take the drug with any regularity--a trip here or there is the norm--its absence didn't immediately register.
I began asking friends going to hippie happenings to look for the drug. At some point, I decided that the disappearance of acid was nearly, if not totally, complete. "Acid is gone," I told him. "How'd you come to this theory? " "I can't find it," I said, "and none of my friends can, either. " He paused and looked up. However you interpret it specifically, it is hard not to find some kind of (albeit humorous) commentary on animal cruelty, modeling or at least fashion in general within this strange stuffed-animal coat design. Sebastian Errazuriz is no stranger to controversy when it comes to clothing design, nor to putting his strange fashions on models in sexy situations and semi-erotic poses. This time, however, has more humor than most. Whether you want to this jacket as a commentary on the state of the fashion industry, animal rights activism or simply as an attempt at humor, this designer works with an awareness of his work’s context that informs not only the designs themselves but also the way he frames, photographs and presents them. Eat your (stuffed) heart out, fickle world of contemporary fashion.

Never underestimate what Americans are willing to spend to slice, dice, mash or muddle in their kitchen.
If there's one thing that is clear from the thousands of products showcased at the recent International Home & Housewares Show in Chicago, it's that we have a healthy appetite for utensils, cookware, knives and cleaning tools -- anything new and shiny that promises to make our kitchen lives easier and more entertaining. But while the housewares industry was ready to provide "wow" products with new innovations, it also was keenly aware there's a recession going on.
As Americans react to the economic downturn by cooking at home more often than going out, there also was a sense of getting back to basics by investing in good pots and pans and kitchen gadgets that will be used long after the initial novelty wears off. It will be sales of those basics that may account for growth in the $76.3 billion American housewares market this year. "OH" RING: What is it? About Vischeck. What is it? Vischeck is a way of showing you what things look like to someone who is color blind.
You can try Vischeck online- either run Vischeck on your own image files or run Vischeck on a web page. You can also download programs to let you run it on your own computer. What is it good for? Roughly 1 in 20 people have some sort of color vision deficiency. The technical stuff Vischeck is a computer simulation of the entire process of human vision. The first stage includes the physical properties of the display devices (including various CRT and LCD monitors, and standard CYMK print on paper), the ambient lighting and the effects of physiological factors such as corneal haze, lens opacities and short or long-sightedness which might degrade the optical image.
The final stage in Vischeck is a model of human cortical vision. City bulldozes away bikes | Ask Metafilter. So a friend of mine locked his bike to a city-provided bike post... he came back and the city (Toronto) had torn up the entire sidewalk for 2 blocks, including where he had locked his bike. The workers tossed the bikes aside, some still locked to the posts, but some of the posts broken in two thereby freeing up the bikes. His bike was gone. There was no indication from the city that they were going to do this (signs not to lock your bike, etc.). Police have been called but consider it a "stolen bike" issue... now what? Photos and more inside. Picture of bulldozer about to tear out bike post. Same area post-post. Picture of heaped bike posts, some broken in two by bulldozers. Picture of some heaped bikes that weren't yet stolen. Some other info: when the situation was explained to the workers (that the bike was missing) they laughed.
