What Is Competency-Based Learning?

By TeachThought Staff Competency-based learning is an approach to education that focuses on the student’s demonstration of desired learning outcomes as central to the learning process. It is concerned chiefly with a student’s progression through curriculum at their own pace, depth, etc. As competencies are proven, students continue to progress. Like most things education-related, there is disagreement of what competency-based learning actually means, what its defining traits are, and how it should ideally be used or function. A key characteristic of competency-based learning is its focus on mastery. It is similar to outcomes-based learning in that said outcomes–in this case, called “competencies”–are identified beforehand, and students are frequently assessed. How “good” or “bad” it is depends on the ecology it is embedded in.

Its strengths lie in its flexibility, as learners are able to move at their own pace. 5 Common Uses Of Technology In The Classroom & How We Screw Them Up. Using technology to enhance learning is an incredibly exciting idea, and as an area of education is growing fast.

The unfortunate reality here is that in lieu of significant progress in how technology is used in the learning process, significant work remains to do a better job understanding how these tools can function to increase depth of knowledge, learning curiosity, and critical thinking skills. Curriculum Is More Important Than Learning Technology. Curriculum Is More Important Than Learning Technology by Grant Wiggins, Ph.D, Authentic Education Here’s a stunner from the weekend New York Times, in a front-page article, no less: “schools are spending billions on technology, even as they lay off teachers, with little proof that this approach is improving basic learning.”

I’m shocked, shocked! Who in their right mind thinks that spending $5000 per classroom on a whiteboard is going to improve student achievement? It has been an endless parade of technological snake oil in my lifetime: TV! These are merely tools, grafted onto a system that doesn’t know what to do with it. In fact, the overwhelming amount of information now available will surely impede learning for many students in the absence of good teaching grounded in good curriculum. Tools don’t drive education; changes in schooling call forth new worthy tools.

It’s all about the Mission and curriculum. Who said this? The 50 Best Freelance Tools for Freelancing Online. Ah, the life of self-employment.

The 50 Best Freelance Tools for Freelancing Online

It is certainly a rewarding one, but remember, it’s a jungle out there. Here at Bidsketch, we feel your pain: the internet offers such a vast ocean of resources that it can be hard to tell which ones are actually worth using. I’d like to believe that this post will alleviate a huge part of that burden. While it took many hours to write, edit, and re-write, it took countless hours of me procrastinating from my work and trying out new tools! VirtualSalt. Online Etymology Dictionary. NASA Science.
