This zoo is using grotesque weapons like prods and bullhooks to “train” their elephants. Medieval tactics are being used to curb, abuse, and dominate innocent animals at a zoo located -- of all places -- in California, which is supposed to rank among the top tier states for animal protection laws.

This zoo is using grotesque weapons like prods and bullhooks to “train” their elephants

How can these conflicting facts both be true? Because the Monterey Zoo is blatantly, and without remorse, breaking the law. They are illegally using bullhooks, prods, and other terrifying equipment to beat, stab, and punish their elephants into submission for the sole purpose of human entertainment and monetary gain. Sign the petition and demand that Monterey revoke Monterey Zoo's operating license so that these poor animals can be relocated to sanctuaries, where they can finally live safe and happy lives! Bullhooks are just as gruesome as they sound -- long, heavy rods of wood with sharp metal hooks on the end, which are often dirty and rusty. When you look into this zoo a bit further, suddenly this law-breaking and abuse is less surprising, but not less tragic.

Rescue India’s Begging Elephants

Indian elephants are being used to beg for money for their owners under cruel and unsafe conditions. The animals are forced into conditions that deprive them of their natural behavior and environment and put their health at risk. The private ownership of elephants has given rise to this industry even though the Indian elephant is becoming an endangered species. The begging elephants have poor housing in urban settings and have to spend long hours on concrete floors without any natural vegetation. In addition, these elephants are chained for extended periods in very unhygienic conditions lacking enough drinking water.

Begging elephants have to walk on hard, hot concrete, which poses a health risk and leads to cracked nails. This is animal cruelty, and it is important for the Indian government to protect this endangered species. Dear Mr. South Africa: Don't strip protections for elephants! Sauvons les éléphants de Tanzanie ! M. 96Elephants.org. Save Elephants From Extinction. The unprecedented demand for ivory has led to a marked rise in poaching – recent projections put the annual death toll of African elephants up to a devastating 35,000. These colossal losses will reverse any gains in conservation efforts and threaten the species' long-term survival. Our only recourse for saving elephants from extinction is extinguishing the insatiable demand for ivory. The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is strongly urging all countries to destroy their stockpiles of ivory and establish a domestic moratorium on its trade.

If broadly adopted, these decisive steps will cripple the ivory industry and allow Africa's elephant populations to stabilize and recover. Humans are the elephant's greatest threat… but we can also unite to serve as their greatest protector.
