Il s’agit du bilan carbone que l’on retrouve déjà sur plusieurs produits vendus dans des épiceries d’Asie et de Grande-Bretagne. Utile ou mêlant pour le consommateur déjà bombardé d’information? Le bilan carbone comptabilise les émissions de gaz à effet de serre générées par la fabrication d'un produit ou d'une activité (dioxyde de carbone (CO2), méthane, oxyde nitreux), tandis que l'empreinte écologique tient compte, par exemple, de l'impact environnemental des pluies acides et de la désertification. Le bilan carbone est exprimé en équivalent-carbone, l’empreinte écologique en équivalent-surface (hectares). Nigel Melican, consultant international en culture et transformation du thé, a présenté le bilan carbone du thé lors de la World Tea Expo à Boston.
