When Technology Makes Headlines. The mainstream news media have offered the American public a divided view of how information technology influences society, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. Over the past year, messages about the promise of technology making life easier and awe about new gadgets have vied in the news with worries about privacy, child predators, shrinking attention spans and danger behind the wheel.

The most prevalent underlying message about technology’s influence has been upbeat—the notion that technology is making life easier and more productive. Nearly a quarter of all technology stories studied from June 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, conveyed this idea. But that was closely followed by the sense that with that convenience comes risk—to our privacy and particularly to our children—which made up nearly two-in-ten stories, according to the study. [1] The mainstream media’s coverage of technology was not vast. Want to Know Why Apple Changed the iTunes Logo? Because CDs Are Dead. - Technorati Blogging. A subject of much controversy since Apple's Wednesday afternoon press conference, the brand new iTunes logo appears to have the blogosphere up in a tizzy. Well, it's time they get over it because Apple is forging ahead, with or without the design snobs. (And on a side note--who the hell thinks they really know design better than Apple does?) Many ask, well why change the logo at all?

Doesn't this fit under "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? No, no it doesn't. That's right. When's the last time you bought a CD? Now look at Apple--when's the last time they produced an album on a CD? I can't think of a reason. There's No Such Thing as a Finite Market. Or Network. | alexpriest.com.

Apple is Missing the Boat with Music Streaming from the Cloud. News early this morning suggests that Apple's recently acquired Lala team (the former music streaming service) may be hard at work on streaming video as opposed to music from the cloud. Apple is missing the boat. A wave is fast approaching in the online music industry, and Apple is showing no signs of acknowledging it any time soon.

That wave, of course, is streaming music--free music--via the cloud. It's a relatively new concept pioneered by companies like Lala (no longer in service after their acquisition by Apple), Grooveshark, and Spotify (still not yet available in the U.S.). These services allow users to sign up for a free account, download or use the online streaming interface, type in a song they want to hear, and get listening immediately. No delay, no limit to the songs available, and with ever-burgeoning catalogs to choose from.

The best part about these services? Continued on the next page. Apple Obliterates Q3 Earnings Estimates On Best Mac Sales Ever And Huge iPad Numbers. In news that should surprise no one by now — Apple once again had a stellar quarter and blew past Wall Street estimates for Q3 2010. Just as with Q1 and Q2 of this year, Apple has been doing so well thanks largely to the iPhone. But unlike those quarters, Apple now has an important new product adding money to their bottom line: the iPad (the iPad had been released just prior to the closing of Q2). And this quarter actually marked Apple’s best ever in terms both revenue and Mac shipments. Apple posted a revenue of $15.7 billion for the quarter (again, a new record — beating even holiday quarters).

And net quarterly profit was at $3.25 billion — $3.51 per diluted share. All of those easily beat both Apple’s own (always low) estimates, as well as Wall Street’s. Apple sold 3.47 million Macs during Q3 — again, a new quarterly record. But the big number is the iPad sales. All that being said, Apple’s gross margin did fall slight to 39.1 percent, versus 40.9 percent a year ago. See also: I am Elago.

The Social Analyst is a weekly column by Mashable Co-Editor Ben Parr, where he digs into social media trends and how they are affecting companies in the space. Did you know that it's been nearly twenty years since the first website was placed online? Have you ever thought about how the Internet and the web have evolved in time? Ponder it: the Internet, a complex series of interconnected networks, protocols, servers, cables, and computers, has evolved from its early days as U.S.

Now that widespread connectivity means you’re rarely without a web connection, the Internet has become a huge part of the way in which we use our computers. Out of the box, your Mac is a powerful machine for making the most of everything the Internet has to offer, but there are a few tweaks, plugins and applications that can make it go a little bit further.

Today I’ll be taking a look at 35 different plugins and applications that will help improve your web browsing experience. Both Safari and Firefox will be covered, along with a few tools relating to networking, search, bookmarking, and – of course – taking a break from the Internet! Safari on Speed Safari is undoubtedly the most popular browser on the Mac, and also a fairly difficult application to extend. It lacks a “add-ons” system and directory in the same vein as Firefox, though does still have several useful plugins available. I’m not very good at it but I try very hard. If you’d suddenly spring up on me and took a look at my screen, it would often be very clustered with several applications running, work half done; not to mention having loads of screenshots and bookmarks on my desktop to remind myself of the tasks I have yet to complete. When it comes to increasing productivity, I try to organize myself by using to-do lists but planning only brings me one step closer to finishing my work. Persistence and determination are the key to getting things done. While writing the first two paragraphs, I checked my mail several times, fired up Safari, updated my Twitter and browsed Facebook. But deadlines are deadlines. To help with the situation and motivate me to clear the work that are currently pending, I’ve come up with 6 great (and free!) Distraction busters Yup, that’s right. To deal with distraction, I’ve come up with not one, not two but three applications.
