Hazards. Auto. Linux Complete Backup and Recovery HOWTO. Charles Curley Imagine your disk drive has just become a very expensive hockey puck. Imagine you have had a fire, and your computer case now looks like something Salvador Dalĩ would like to paint. Now what? Total restore, sometimes called bare metal recovery, is the process of rebuilding a computer after a catastrophic failure. In order to make a total restoration, you must have complete backups, not only of your file system, but of partition information and other data. This HOWTO is a step-by-step tutorial on how to back up a Linux computer so as to be able to make a bare metal recovery, and how to make that bare metal recovery. It includes some related scripts. The normal bare metal restoration process is: install the operating system from the product disks.

The process and scripts explained in this HOWTO will save re-installing the operating system. 1.1. If you have any questions, please contact <linux-howto at metalab.unc.edu>. 1.2. 1.4. 1.5. 1.6. This list includes operators that are not officially supported by Google and not listed in Google’s online help. Each entry typically includes the syntax, the capabilities, and an example. Some of the search operators won’t work as intended if you put a space between the colon (:) and the subsequent query word. If you don’t care to check which search operators require no space after the colon, always place the keyword immediately next to the colon. Many search operators can appear anywhere in your query. Johns Hopkins Magazine -- February 1999. Degrees of Difficulty Illustration by Wally Neibart What is the most difficult language to learn? Richard Brecht Deputy Director, National Foreign Language Center Japanese is without question the most daunting language for a native English speaker to tackle, according to Brecht. "I would like to learn Japanese but I don't have enough time in my lifetime. That's very depressing," says the linguist, whose center is based at Hopkins's Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He notes that the State Department allows its students three times as long to learn Japanese as it does languages like Spanish or French.

As Brecht explains it, the challenge with Japanese is threefold. Get beyond that and you're faced with a culture that, says Brecht, is "truly foreign for most Americans. " Finally, there's the issue of grammar. While exceedingly difficult, mastering Japanese is not impossible for English speakers, Brecht concedes. What is the most difficult math problem to solve? First benchmarks of the ext4 file system | Seeing that the development of the ext3 file system successor has started, and that Andrew Morton has released mm patch containing ext4 file system, I decided to run some simple benchmarks, even in this early stage of development. Because the mm patch also contains Hans Reiser's reiser4 file system, I decided to run benchmarks against it, too, for a good measure.

Let me once again remind that both ext4 and reiser4 are still in development, while ext3 has been in production for many years, so take all the results below with a grain of salt. Setup All tests were run on a modern Intel E6600 based desktop equipped with an ATA disk. Sequential reading/writing I used an aging bonnie application to make some quick measurements of file system performance when doing sequential I/O operation. Not much surprises here. Sequential writing, on the other hand, shows that there are some real improvements built into ext4. Creating/deleting small files Postmark Conclusion. Ext2 IFS For Window. Study | nix | commands | f. This appendix is an edited reprint of the paper , by David Goldberg, published in the March, 1991 issue of Computing Surveys.

Copyright 1991, Association for Computing Machinery, Inc., reprinted by permission. Abstract Floating-point arithmetic is considered an esoteric subject by many people. This is rather surprising because floating-point is ubiquitous in computer systems. Almost every language has a floating-point datatype; computers from PCs to supercomputers have floating-point accelerators; most compilers will be called upon to compile floating-point algorithms from time to time; and virtually every operating system must respond to floating-point exceptions such as overflow.

This paper presents a tutorial on those aspects of floating-point that have a direct impact on designers of computer systems. Colors of noise - Wikipedia, the free ency. This sense of "color" for noise signals is similar to the concept of timbre in music (which is also called "tone color"); however the latter is almost always used for sound, and may consider very detailed features of the spectrum. Power-law noise[edit] Many of these definitions assume a signal with components at all frequencies, with a power spectral density per unit of bandwidth proportional to 1/f β and hence they are examples of power-law noise.

For instance, the spectral density of white noise is flat (β = 0), while flicker or pink noise has β = 1, and brown noise has β = 2. Technical definitions[edit] Various noise models are employed in analysis, many of which fall under the above categories. The color names for these different types of sounds are derived from a loose analogy between the spectrum of frequencies of sound wave present in the sound (as shown in the blue diagrams) and the equivalent spectrum of light wave frequencies.
