No cabe duda de que el hecho de sustituir OER por una masa de materiales educativos caros ahorra dinero al Gobierno y aumenta el acceso a dichos materiales para la formación, y este aumento hará surgir un aumento considerable en los resultados académicos de muchos alumnos que, de otra forma, no habrían tenido acceso a dichos materiales (por ejemplo, aquellos cuyo estado económico no les permite adquirir libros de texto). Si se diera el suficiente porcentaje de esos estudiantes en una población determinada, la mejora en sus vidas académicas podría hacer surgir incluso una comparación entre el aprendizaje anterior y posterior a la OER.
