As the article points out, Höch was an unlikely addition to the early 20th-century group — which favored the irrational, nihilistic, collaborative, and spontaneous — namely, because Höch was a woman. One of the group’s pioneering photomontage artists, Höch critiqued the role of women, beauty standards, marriage, the politics of her home country, Germany, and the oft-misogynist Dada group itself. Take Höch’s 1919 work Cut With the Kitchen Knife Dada Through the Last Weimar Beer-Belly Cultural Epoch of Germany, for instance. The title says it all. J’en ai parlé avec l’auteur (c’est un copain très sympa), il a été tout surpris. Pourtant, après discussion, il est tombé d’accord avec moi : oui, c’est vrai, son bouquin est sexiste. Pas méchamment macho, pas violemment misogyne, non. Juste empreint d’un sexisme ordinaire, qui se traduit dans son livre à la façon d’une loupe qui amplifierait les tares de notre société. « Purée, j’avais pas fait gaffe, si seulement j’aurais su ! Voici les principaux points auxquels il faut, je crois, prêter attention. 1) Vous avez le syndrome de la Shtroumpfette. Comment arranger ça ? 2) Vous avez le syndrome Trinity. Par dessus le marché, en plus de TOUTES ses compétences, votre personnage a une apparence physique validée par le regard masculin. Que faire pour éviter ça ? 3) Vos personnages féminins sont des mamans ou des putains. À l’inverse, il y a la putain. Parfois, un personnage parvient à être les deux en même temps.
