* Q: Wha? A: These previously published entries have been updated with new information in the last 24 hours. You can find past updates here . If I hadn't seen it on the official Emmentaler web site , I would have thought this video about cheese producers using geckos to produce better cheese was fake. Pesky flies buzzing around our cows cause them stress. And this affects the quality of the milk.

In the summer of 1990, the Chicago Bulls had been dismissed from the playoffs by Detroit’s Bad Boy Pistons for the third consecutive time. Things looked particularly bleak for the Bulls in the point guard match up that pitted the slow footed, sound shooting John Paxson against the lighting quick, smiling blur of Isiah Thomas. Phil Jackson, second year head coach of the Bulls, had a solution in mind. He wanted to lighten Paxson’s load by implementing a system offense that didn’t require a dominant ball handler. Fortunately for the Bulls, they happened to have an architect for just this kind of offense on hand. In the fall of 1990, Tex Winter was keeping a watchful eye over drills during the Bulls training camp.

Last week, I wrote about Google’s amazing new self-driving car , which CEI General Counsel Sam Kazman and I had the opportunity to test-ride in downtown Washington, D.C. The potential for this technology is huge, and it will likely revolutionize the way we think about travel, in addition to dramatically improving congestion, air quality, and auto safety. But leave it to California to be a wet blanket of over-regulation and techno-pessimism. http://www.openmarket.org/

Open Market

Fascinating article in today’s Times , by Anne Barnard : Starting next year, New York will become the first state to require lawyers to perform unpaid work before being licensed to practice, the state’s chief judge announced on Tuesday, describing the rule as a way to help the growing number of people who cannot afford legal services. The approximately 10,000 lawyers who apply to the New York State Bar each year will have to demonstrate that they have performed 50 hours of pro bono work to be admitted, Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman said. He said the move was intended to provide about a half-million hours of badly needed legal services to those with urgent problems, like foreclosure and domestic violence. You should do an article about how pop-ups drive people away from websites, even after the viewer opts out.

This evening, I’ll be providing live, real-time commentary on the State of the Union Address along with my Forbes colleagues Josh Barro and Rick Ungar . Rick has seen the speech already and claims “ Bingo .” Some of my Econ 100 students are (probably) watching and writing up a summary and evaluation of the speech in light of these principles of economics . 11:00 PM: Final words. I’m not really sure what to make of the Republican response. http://blogs.forbes.com/artcarden/

I lead a small life – well, valuable, but small – and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven’t been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn’t it be the other way around?” ( you’ve got mail)

I volunteer as an assistant coach for a small high school’s varsity boys basketball team. This season, more than the last three, I have taken over as the head coach for practices and games when the coach, John, is out of town. As a former player, an assistant coach, and a sometimes head coach I have a unique view in the sport and team.
