How To Use Pee In Your Garden. If you can get over the ewwww factor, pee-cycling your own urine into the garden makes good sense. Fresh urine is high in nitrogen, moderate in phosphorus and low in potassium and can act as an excellent high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer or as a compost accelerator. Components of Urine The exact breakdown of urine varies depending on the diet of the pee-maker. The more protein a person consumes, the more nitrogen will be excreted into the urine. Typical Western Diet pee has an NPK ratio of about 11-1-2. In comparison, blood meal is 12-2-1 and cottonseed meal is 7-2-2. Urine also contains salt – sometimes quite a lot of it if you are hopped up on a diet of canned soup and french fries.

Keep in mind that areas with a lot of rain (Seattle!) Fresh pee can have a pH anywhere from 5 to 9 depending on a person’s diet, but it tends to move toward neutral as it ages and breaks down when applied outside. Safety Issues In a healthy person, urine is sterile. Grossness Issues Okay, I’ve convinced you! 1. Vegetal City - Luc Schuiten. Portable Farms Aquaponics Systems. A FOREST GARDEN YEAR Perennial crops for a changing climate by Martin Crawford. Forest Farming vs. Forest Gardening: What’s the Difference? | Farming the Woods. Steve Gabriel In our pursuit of discovering forest farmers for the writing of our book, we’ve received a lot of responses from folks around developing forest gardens. This post describes the difference between the two practices. We are absolutely supportive and encouraging of forest gardens and see the two practices as companions. The topic of forest gardening has been well articulated in Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier’s 2005 book, Edible Forest Gardens Vol 1 & 2. (EFG) Definitions With many agricultural and horticultural practices out in the world, there are many lines that one can draw in the sand; some useful and some less so.

Forest Gardening: mimicking the structure and function of forests in the way we garden, or using the forest as a model for the way we garden. Dave Jacke and others advocate that in Forest Gardening we want to mimic mid-succession forests and woodlands with a 40 – 50% canopy cover. As Dave Jacke says, this is This is gardening/farming IN the forest. Like this: Of Plums and Pignuts | forest gardening and perennial vegetables. Hugelkultur: the ultimate raised garden beds. Raised garden bed hugelkultur after one month raised garden bed hugelkultur after one year raised garden bed hugelkultur after two years raised garden bed hugelkultur after twenty years It's a german word and some people can say it all german-ish. I'm an american doofus, so I say "hoogle culture". I had to spend some time with google to find the right spelling.

I learned this high-falootin word at my permaculture training. Hugelkultur is nothing more than making raised garden beds filled with rotten wood. I do think there are some considerations to keep in mind. Another thing to keep in mind is that wood is high in carbon and will consume nitrogen to do the compost thing.

Pine and fir will have some levels of tanins in them, but I'm guessing that most of that will be gone when the wood has been dead for a few years. The above sign has been used as a business sign, almost a trade mark, for a number of years, consequently it is regarded with a certain amount of affection by my family. Some years after first using it I was told that it was a very old Northern European or Germanic symbol meaning--the living man -the signal of victory; that it derives from the ancient Sanskrit sign of life-fertility --and well being.

All of these things have their foundation in fertile soil-always the dominating factor. The health and well being of mankind depends first on the fertility of the soil.
