Ruta del Peregrino. The Pilgrim Route / Mexico. Lookout by Alejandro Aravena Every year, over 2,000 people go on a 100 km pilgrimage path near Guadalajara, Mexico during Holy Week.
Municipalities along the route decided to give the pilgrims some service areas along this route, so the Secreaty of Turism of Jalisco comissioned these projects to a group of both mexican and international architects: Ai Wei Wei (FAKE Design), Luis Aldrete, Christ & Gantenbein, Dellekamp Arquitectos (featured on AD), Elemental (featured on AD), Godoylab, HHF, Periférica and Tatiana Bilbao mxa. By looking at the projects, you can tell they wanted this to remain simple, as structures that will remain abandoned most of the year and will age becoming part of the landscape. Every year during Holy Week, over two million people walk through the Jalisco Mountains in Mexico.
La Ruta del Peregrino (or The Pilgrim’s Route) is an extremely profitable event for the poor villagers who live in the mountains year round. because of this, the government has commissioned architects and designers to build nine stopping points along the route. the starting point is in the town of Ameca and the final destination is the Rosario Virgin in Talpa de Allende. the entire route runs 117 km and the walk takes you all the way up to an altitude of 2000 meters. the architects and artists chosen were as follows: Ai Weiwei, Derek Dellekamp, Elemental, HHF Architects, Tatiana Bilbao. the sanctuaries and shelters provide a resting spot and viewing point for walkers. photos via Iwan.

Hace alrededor de dos meses fue detenido en Pekín por las autoridades chinas y aún se desconoce su paradero. La Bienal reclama a uno de sus habitantes con el lema “Free Ai WeiWei”. Ai WeiWei, artista contemporáneo, diseñador y activista político ha incursionado en el campo arquitectónico en múltiples proyectos y de maneras muy diversas. Colaboró con Herzog & De Meuron en el famoso “Nido de Pájaro” de las Olimpiadas de Pekín, y recientemente en nuestro país en el proyecto de la Ruta del Peregrino en Jalisco, entre otros. The pavilion, named The Sanctuary, angles up from the landscape to create a platform overlooking the Jalisco mountains. The structure is stepped in profile to create a length of seating for resting pilgrims. La Ruta del Peregrino is a 117km-long pilgrimage, along which each new structure provides a shelter and landmark.
