By Natalie Stechyson For months this fall, protesters occupied public spaces in cities across Canada, the U.S. and around the world to object to corporate greed and social and economic inequality — but did the movement garner much sympathy?
It depends on where you ask, according to a new global poll. Over half of Canadians sympathized with the Occupy movement, according to the results tallied from 23 countries and released Friday by global research company Ipsos. Canadians sat right on the fence, with 52 per cent of respondents who were given a brief description of the movement reporting that they sympathized. That’s just a hair under the global average of 53 per cent but well above the U.S., where 45 per cent of respondents reported they were sympathetic.
Within Canada, respondents from Ontario were the most sympathetic to the Occupy movement, at 55 per cent. Globally, South Korea was the most sympathetic, at 67 per cent, followed by Indonesia (65 per cent) and India (64 per cent). Occupy protesters rally against Congress at Capitol. (Bebeto Matthews - AP) The Wall Street Journal reports that Occupy Wall Street voted Saturday to stop funding new projects because their funds were dwindling. The Atlantic Wire reported last week that fewer were donating to the group than ever and that Occupy is “hemorrhaging cash.” In flusher times, the group was eager to spend money spreading the message. Occupy Wall Street manages its budget with help from the Alliance for Global Justice, a nonprofit based in the District, according to BuzzFeed.

All “elected” officials bought their way into gerrymandered seats with Wall Street money. In the face of this endemic corruption, the Occupy movement is about organizing locally to discuss and change these problems from the ground up.
