Baker Street Café - Don’t think twice - Ottawa XPress. Baker Street Café's perfect cinnamon bunPhoto: Ben Welland Discover Baker Street Café, XPress' new favourite brunch hangout I have found the ideal breakfast nook of a restaurant.
Complete with black checkered tablecloths, golden topped bread and a classic rock soundtrack, Baker Street Café is relaxed, filling and delicious. The London Underground Baker Street symbol dominates one wall and band portraits adorn the others. I’d read about the long lines, so my friend and I arrive at 8:30 a.m. Baker Street is particularly known for its cinnamon buns. When our cinnamon bun arrives, it’s everything I want it to be. The pastry is a warm-up for my actual breakfast: a fresh apple crepe served with a juicy sausage, a mountain of scrambled eggs and fresh fruit. Since the quality of an eggs Benedict dish is usually a good indication of a restaurant’s aptitude, my friend gets an order. The only bone I have to pick is in terms of price. Ceylonta - Spices and flavours - Ottawa XPress. Knowledgeable servers cut through the soft glow of Ceylonta’s gold and maroon dining room under the watch of wooden statues of Hindu gods.
Food takes more than 20 minutes. Then everything comes at once. The fish cutlet is two mild balls of flavourful flaked white fish, potato and coriander coated in exceptionally crisp besan flour breading. Lovely vadai, crisp lentil fritters with meaty-textured insides, are aromatic with onion, fennel seed and cilantro. The undercooked pastry of the samosa disappoints. All appetizers come with robust chutneys tasty enough to be eaten alone. Mains arrive on a variety of pretty white plates. Mutton string-hoppers are a lightly sauced, pillowy tangle of caramelized vermicelli, lean diced lamb and fried egg seasoned with smoky curry leaves, bay, mustard and red chili. Masala dosa, a crisp lentil and rice crepe stuffed with fork-mashed potatoes, has restrained bittersweet, earthy flavours. Seoul House - Nice, nice, very nice - Ottawa XPress. XPress readers say the best Korean grub is served at Seoul House on Bank Street.
The award is proudly posted in the window next to their menu, which features a mix of Korean and Japanese dishes. But oddly enough, I prefer the Japanese to the Korean offerings. On my first visit, it’s a weeknight and I’m looking for something light and fresh. I catch a glimpse of sashimi on a cute wooden board at the table next to me and can’t resist. I’m soon digging into a bowl of hwe dupbap – rice topped with hefty chunks of raw tuna, salmon, snapper and mackerel, with a pile of carrots and greens. They recommend adding hot sauce, so I sprinkle it liberally over the whole bowl. Cool tender fish gets deliciously mixed up in each bite with the fresh crisp vegetables, steaming rice and hit of spice. National Gallery of Canada. Canadian Museum of Civilization. Ciphers: Tension With Tradition in Contemporary Iranian Photography - Tehran state of mind - Ottawa XPress. Iran like you've never seen it in new exhibit Ciphers: Tension With Tradition in Contemporary Iranian Photography Most Canadians know about Iranian culture through films, media articles and books, but the actual work of many of Iran’s top artists is rarely glimpsed outside of this closed society.
SAW Gallery and the faculty of visual arts at the University of Ottawa will change all of that this week when they present the works – and host a handful of the actual artists – for Ciphers: Tension With Tradition in Contemporary Iranian Photography. "The exhibition is basically the result of a number of years of research into Iranian photographic art and contemporary art in Iran," explains curator Andrea Fitzpatrick, who is also a contemporary art history professor at the University of Ottawa.
"A few years ago I discovered that there was a huge and really vibrant photographic and video art scene in particular in Tehran. Apartment613.
