☢️ Theory

While many core concepts In the human sciences have a generic meaning that can travel across disciplines, 'theory' Is less easy to pin down.

This is due to the role theory plays In social research, a role complicated by the fact that it Is utilised for different purposes by different academic perspectives working in different philosophical traditions within the human sciences.

What is a theory?

A theory is a proposition about the relationship between things. In principle, a theory is universal, applying at all times and to all instances of the thing(s) in question. In the social sciences, the notion of ‘theory’ needs to be treated more cautiously than in the natural sciences, because of the complexity of social phenomena and because people react to knowledge about themselves in a way that chemicals and forces do not.

Supposition or system of ideas intended to explain something In modern science, the term "theory" refers to scientific theories, a well-confirmed type of explanation of nature, made in a way consistent with the scientific method, and fulfilling the criteria required by modern science. Such theories are described in such a way that scientific tests should be able to provide empirical support for it, or empirical contradiction ("falsify") of it. Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge,[1] in contrast to more common uses of the word "theory" that imply that something is unproven or speculative (which in formal terms is better characterized by the word hypothesis).[2] Scientific theories are distinguished from hypotheses, which are individual empirically testable conjectures, and from scientific laws, which are descriptive accounts of the way nature behaves under certain conditions.
