Philosophical study of being Ontologists disagree about which entities exist on the most basic level. Platonic realism asserts that universals have objective existence. Conceptualism says that universals only exist in the mind while nominalism denies their existence. There are similar disputes about mathematical objects, unobservable objects assumed by scientific theories, and moral facts. The origins of ontology lie in the ancient period with speculations about the nature of being and the source of the universe, including ancient Indian, Chinese, and Greek philosophy.

Ontology is the study of being. The word ontology has its roots in the ancient Greek terms ὄντως (ontos, meaning being) and λογία (logia, meaning study of), literally, the study of being. The scope of ontology covers diverse entities, including everyday objects, living beings, celestial bodies, ideas, numbers, and fictional creatures. Being, or existence, is the main topic of ontology. Particulars and universals [edit] Ontology Browser. Semanticweb.org. jOWL - semantic javascript library. Ontologies have become core components of many large applications yet the training material has not kept pace with the growing interest. This paper addresses the issues of why one would build an ontology and presents a methodology for creating ontologies based on declarative knowledge representation systems.

It leverages the two authors experiences building and maintaining ontologies in a number of ontology environments including Protege-2000, Ontolingua, and Chimaera. It presents the methodology by example utilizing a tutorial wines knowledge base example. While it is aimed at users of frame-based systems, it can be useful for building ontologies in any object-centered system. Natalya F. The full paper is available in pdf, word, and html format. Consider the following example sentences: The Golgi apparatus consists of stacks of flattened sacs, or cisternae, which, unlike ER cisternae, are not physically connected.

The centrioles are not essential for cell division. The usual replication machinery provides no way to complete the 5' ends of daughter DNA strands. Temomeres do not contain genes. The special base triplets UAA, UAG, and UGA do not code for amino acids but instead act as signals to stop translation. Both nucleoli and ribosomes, unlike most other organelles, are not enclosed in membrane.

Prokaryotes do not have mitotic spindle. Because bacteria lack nuclei, their DNA is not segregated from ribosomes and the other protein-synthesizing equipment. The leader and trailer are not translated, nor is the poly(A) tail. This means that most eukaryotic genes and their RNA transcripts have long noncoding stretches of nucleotides, regions that are not translated.

Table of Contents This chapter contains some descriptions of the work process and analysis of the requirements and use cases that was carried out as a part of this incubator. As basic sources of solutions, we used the Content ODPs available from the ODP Portal. 4.4.1 Information Flow Use Case Solution Approach The Measuring Info Flow use case requires tracking the user's progress (transitions) through a series of relevant decision states. Progress The Neon Toolkit was used to import the Transition pattern into a new ontology file.

Instances of the pattern were created for testing. Figure 1: A conceptual illustration of the idea behind the information flow of a decision process. Figure 2: Modelling the ontology representation of the conceptual idea of information flow, using the NeOn Toolkit. Impact.
