Metadata is "data about data".[1] There are two "metadata types;" structural metadata, about the design and specification of data structures or "data about the containers of data"; and descriptive metadata about individual instances of application data or the data content.

The main purpose of metadata is to facilitate in the discovery of relevant information, more often classified as resource discovery. Metadata also helps organize electronic resources, provide digital identification, and helps support archiving and preservation of the resource. Metadata assists in resource discovery by "allowing resources to be found by relevant criteria, identifying resources, bringing similar resources together, distinguishing dissimilar resources, and giving location information. " [2] Definition[edit] Metadata (metacontent) is defined as the data providing information about one or more aspects of the data, such as: Metadata is data. Libraries[edit] Photographs[edit] Video[edit] Web pages[edit] [edit] [edit] Metadata Repository. Database storing metadata A metadata repository is a database created to store metadata. Metadata is information about the structures that contain the actual data.

Metadata is often said to be "data about data", but this is misleading. Data profiles are an example of actual "data about data". Metadata adds one layer of abstraction to this definition– it is data about the structures that contain data. Metadata may describe the structure of any data, of any subject, stored in any format. A well-designed metadata repository typically contains data far beyond simple definitions of the various data structures. Comparing the metadata of a couple data items - one digital and one physical - clarify what metadata is: First, digital: For data stored in a database one may have a table called "Patient" with many columns, each containing data which describes a different attribute of each patient.

The metadata repository is responsible for physically storing and cataloging metadata. Generic Integration. Metadata Registry. A metadata registry is a central location in an organization where metadata definitions are stored and maintained in a controlled method. A metadata repository is the database where metadata is stored.

The registry also adds relationships with related metadata types. [edit] Metadata registries are used whenever data must be used consistently within an organization or group of organizations. Examples of these situations include: Organizations that transmit data using structures such as XML, Web Services or EDIOrganizations that need consistent definitions of data across time, between databases, between organizations or between processes, for example when an organization builds a data warehouseOrganizations that are attempting to break down "silos" of information captured within applications or proprietary file formats [edit] A metadata registry typically has the following characteristics: Clear separation of semantics and system-specific constraints[edit] ISO standards[edit] ISO/IEC 11179[edit]
