But a vast technical literature has been developed around the subject of the 'social organisation of talk', and Silverman (1998, p. 273) confesses that 'the way in which CA obtains its results is rather different from how we might intuitively try to analyse talk'. He offers what he calls 'a crude set of prescriptions about how to do CN:
1. Always try to identify sequences of related talk.
2. Try to examine how speakers take on certain roles or identities through their talk (for example, questioner-answerer or client-professional)
3. Look for particular outcomes in the talk (for example, a request for clarification, a repair, laughter) and work backwards to trace the trajectory through which a particular outcome was produced.

Conversation analysis. Conversation analysis (commonly abbreviated as CA) is an approach to the study of social interaction, embracing both verbal and non-verbal conduct, in situations of everyday life. As its name implies, CA began with a focus on casual conversation, but its methods were subsequently adapted to embrace more task- and institution-centered interactions, such as those occurring in doctors' offices, courts, law enforcement, helplines, educational settings, and the mass media.
As a consequence, the term 'conversation analysis' has become something of a misnomer, but it has continued as a term for a distinctive and successful approach to the analysis of social interaction. CA analysis[edit] As in all research, conversational analysis begins by setting up a research problem. Basic structures[edit] Turn-taking organization[edit] In the absence of formal agendas, the set of practices through which turns are allocated in conversation has been the subject of study in its own right.
