In communications or computer systems, a configuration of a system refers to the arrangement of each of its functional units, according to their nature, number and chief characteristics. Often, configuration pertains to the choice of hardware, software, firmware, and documentation.

Along with its architecture, the configuration of a computer system affects both its function and performance. See also[edit] References[edit] Federal Standard 1037C External links[edit] Elektra. Configuration Management. Process for maintaining consistency of a product attributes with its design Configuration management (CM) is a management process for establishing and maintaining consistency of a product's performance, functional, and physical attributes with its requirements, design, and operational information throughout its life.[1][2] The CM process is widely used by military engineering organizations to manage changes throughout the system lifecycle of complex systems, such as weapon systems, military vehicles, and information systems. Outside the military, the CM process is also used with IT service management as defined by ITIL, and with other domain models in the civil engineering and other industrial engineering segments such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.[3][4][5] CM applied over the life cycle of a system provides visibility and control of its performance, functional, and physical attributes.

Configuration management database [edit] Information assurance Maintenance systems. CMDB (configuration management database) ITIL database used by an organization to store information about hardware and software assets A configuration management database (CMDB) is an ITIL term for a database used by an organization to store information about hardware and software assets (commonly referred to as configuration items). It is useful to break down configuration items into logical layers.[1] This database acts as a data warehouse for the organization and also stores information regarding the relationships among its assets.[2] The CMDB provides a means of understanding the organization's critical assets and their relationships, such as information systems, upstream sources or dependencies of assets, and the downstream targets of assets.[3] Purpose and benefits[edit] CMDB implementations often involve federation – the inclusion of data into the CMDB from other sources – such as asset management, in such a way that the source of the data retains control of the data.
