The word data is the traditional plural form of the now-archaic datum, neuter past participle of the Latin dare, "to give", hence "something given". In discussions of problems in geometry, mathematics, engineering, and so on, the terms givens and data are used interchangeably. This usage is the origin of data as a concept in computer science or data processing: data are accepted numbers, words, images, etc. Data is also increasingly used in humanities (particularly in the growing digital humanities) the highly interpretive nature whereof might oppose the ethos of data as "given".
Usage in English[edit] Datum means "an item given". In cartography, geography, nuclear magnetic resonance and technical drawing it often refers to a reference datum wherefrom distances to all other data are measured. Data is most often used as a singular mass noun in educated everyday usage.[11][12] Some major newspapers such as The New York Times use it either in the singular or plural. See also[edit] Data curation. Data curation is the organization and integration of data collected from various sources. It involves annotation, publication and presentation of the data so that the value of the data is maintained over time, and the data remains available for reuse and preservation. Data curation includes "all the processes needed for principled and controlled data creation, maintenance, and management, together with the capacity to add value to data".[1] In science, data curation may indicate the process of extraction of important information from scientific texts, such as research articles by experts, to be converted into an electronic format, such as an entry of a biological database.[2] History and practice [edit] Census data has been available in tabulated punch card form since the early 20th century and has been electronic since the 1960s.[10] The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) website marks 1962 as the date of their first Survey Data Archive.[11]
Research Data Curation | UC Merced Library. The library can assist faculty and researchers with the many-faceted steps of research data curation—from preparing research data management plans (which are required for many funding agencies), through file management best practices and metadata creation, to data sharing and data archiving. If you would like assistance with research data curation, please contact us. If you would like to schedule a consultation to better understand what services the library can offer, please schedule an appointment: Preparing Data Management Plans Preparing a data management plan is not only a requirement for many funding agencies, but also encourages successful handling of collected data across a project’s lifecycle and beyond.
What is a Data Dictionary? A Data Dictionary is a collection of names, definitions, and attributes about data elements that are being used or captured in a database, information system, or part of a research project.
