Bokeh Effect - tutorial - How to setup Vray for bokeh. Share with your friends!
Recently I saw a movie on DVD: “Bounty hunter”, nice movie. As often happens to me, there’s always a detail that attracts my attention. Already happened with the caustic effect in the pool and once again is about light I’m talking about. My idea started when the main actors go to dinner. This is the scene: No, it was not Jennifer Aniston to caught my attention, at least not this time!
Bokeh effect is a direct consequence of a restict depth of field, so distant objects from the focused area result deformed, taking strange shapes such as circles, pentagons, hexagons and so on. V-Ray also offers a feature to simulate this type of effect: enable the depth of field and just flag on “blades” (bokeh effects rollout). « Is it really so easy?
Of course, in order to display this effect, you shoudl be able to produce a narrow depth of field, paying attention to: Focal lenghtDistance from the subjectAperture (f number) Here the scene from the top view: How to light a scene with 1 V-Ray light with HDRI. With your friends!
The big difference between interior and exterior renders is the light: precisely the way as the light is spreaded in the scene. In interior renders the light decay is clear, this is why interior renders have more shades and they look nicer than exteriors. In a different way the exteriors are often lighted by the sun, this light condition is simpler but the problem is the flat lighting.
Sun light does not decay so everything appear flatter. But there’s a solution! Is the easiest way to light a scene getting a perfect light, HDRI is perfect to accord: Sun and Sky light Environment reflections Background image With you don’t need to tune more parameters in order to according all these features because it’s all embedded in the HDRI file. (I bought many hdri from Peter: I’m so satisfied) He created big and awesome HDRIs. This post has been updated > V-Ray Caustics V2 ! I went on holiday, I spent two wonderful weeks in Zante – thinking in a V-Ray Sea Simulation – and I must confess it: these days I was particularly attracted to those amazing play of light that you see on the bottom of the sea and swimming pools. This is a physical effect that takes the name of “Caustics” and you have probably already read somewhere that you can simulate this effect with V-Ray. Let’s see how. The light passes through a curvee and transparent body (glass, water ..) , so the light will tend to concentrate it in some areas.
Very often we create material “Water” material using “Affect shadows” option. Panel rendering (F10) > Indirect Illumination> V-Ray Caustics > ON [X] Here a little explainiation of the main 4 parameters you’ll find there: CAUSTIC SUBDIVISION parameter: It ‘important to manage the details of the caustic. (In the attached file, “Caustic subdivs.” setting is 30000. How to get a nice depht of field. Share with your friends!
I really hate to talk about options and parameters. Understanding through the parameters seems to me a great bullshit. It’s necessary to deeply understand things, then just apply to the software. That’s because 90% of this article is devoted to a simple explanation of what the depth of field is and what it depends.
The softwares does not invent anything new, once you understood the fundamental issue so the application will be really simple. For each picture there is just one place where the photo is perfectly sharp. Outside of this space objects start to appear increasingly blurred. This space is called Depth of Field and the objects in this space appears perfectly sharp. There are 3 importants things: Focal lenghtDistance from the subjectAperture (f number) How to increase Blur DOF effect?
