This second part is about the intaglio printmaking techniques - engraving, drypoint, etching, aquatint, stipple, mezzotint. First Publication: May 2001 Latest Update: April 2013 Intaglio Printmaking The intaglio printmaking techniques work by incising into the surface of a plate (steel, copper etc.) with tools or with acid. Afterwards the plate is coated with ink.
Engraving Engraving is the oldest and most common of the intaglio techniques. In the beginning copper plates were used. Like for a woodcut, hardly more than 2000 or 3000 impressions could be obtained from one plate. Etching For etchings the plate is first covered with an acid-resistant wax or resin ground. It is one of the very old techniques dating back to the fourteenth century when it was used to apply decorations on armor. Drypoint. Wonderfoam-collagraph-prints-foam-prints. Printmaking. Tugboat Printshop: Woodblock Cuts and Prints. Tugboat Printshop is the home woodblock print studio of artists Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth.
They create their prints completely by hand—art, woodblock carving, printing and all. In doing so, they hope to preserve and expand the art of woodcutting and woodblock prints. They try to keep pieces affordable but of high-quality, using only top-shelf materials. It's amazing to me how much work goes into each print and how every little detail must be precise, or the final image will flop. I'm thankful that they share their process, because, not only does it show the labor involved, but, to me, each process piece is artwork in itself, and I love seeing the prints unfold from the blocks. A number of prints include handcrafted type, which is fun to see, and all of the prints have bold lines and rich color characteristic of the genre. They show their prints and processes at their blog.

The author uses the analogy of the Elements of Art being like the “building blocks” that artists use to create their artwork. Similar to how different atoms combine to form other things (ex. hydrogen and oxygen combine to form H2O), the artist combines some or all of the Elements of Art (line, shape, form, space, texture, value, color) to create his painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. Teaching your students about the Elements of Art will give you a common vocabulary with which to talk about Art, whether it be student work or the work of a master from long ago.
