English 50 Exercises for Story Writers. English 50 – Intro to Creative Writing: Exercises for Story Writers Basic Theory: What is a short story? As soon as someone delivers a definition, some good writer will write a story that proves the theory wrong. About the only thing we can say for sure is that short stories are short and that they are written in what we call prose. Some attributes, however, seem to show up more often than not. Short stories have a narrator; that is, someone tells the story; have at least one character in them; have some action occur (or perhaps fails to occur); take place somewhere; that is, there is a setting for the action; and someone either learns something or fails to learn something (theme). With these five characteristics in mind, we can create an almost endless supply of exercises to help sharpen our techniques of story telling.

Check out this review and giveaway of Margaret Peot’s Alternative Art Journals by Quinn McDonald, a writer and certified creativity coach. Here’s what she had to say about it: “The variety is big and interesting. The suggestions for alternatives are challenging so the book is suitable for beginners and advanced artists as well as those who like to flip through a book for ideas and head off on their own.” Here’s one of the techniques for mixed media journaling that Peot explores in Chapter Three: Card Set Art Journals You want to make art, but the days and weeks slip by, and other, “more important” things always seem to take precedence over your artistic journey.

Tie Together in Various Ways Your cards can be unified in any number of ways: by theme, by palette, by repeated imagery. Gratitude Art Journal Page Project by Vanessa Spencer. The Dyan Reaveley journal pages are functional and constructed with quality materials, fit to hold all your artistic musings no matter what medium you create with. Inspired by the colorful new book "Art Doodle Love", our Shoppe Manager Vanessa Spencer creates a vibrant journal page in her Dyan Reaveley journal with a pop of color and fun patterns.

She starts by stenciling the Diamonds Stencil design onto the left page with a bright purple paint, and then paints various parts of the two pages with the purple and a rich teal paint. "After drying, the paint appeared far too bright for me so I actually decided to do some 'covering up' with a few layers," says Vanessa. She glues down some torn vintage ledger paper on parts of both pages, then mixes some clear gesso with yellow acrylic paint and paints over the “brightness” of the other colors. The clear gesso mixture with the yellow acrylic paint (when dry) creates a really nice “tooth” for journaling, especially with a pencil. Words to Live By Journal Page Project by Vanessa Spencer. Creating art journal and memory pages is one of my favorite crafting activities.

I was inspired by the Grafix rub-onz and decided to try a journal page with a little whimsy without losing edge. First I painted my journal page from the Ranger Ink Dylusions Creative Journal with blue acrylic paint. I actually could have waited longer for the blue paint to dry because I stenciled over the blue with the Words to Live By Stencil and pink acrylic paint (using a brayer) and when I peeled the stencil back, I lifted the blue (which was not my intention.) However, I like how my little mistake revealed the raw paper and decided to leave it as is. Using the Grafix rub-onz, I was able to create my own unique rub-ons with a personal photograph and some text I typed up in a Word document. It’s very important to read the directions carefully on the Grafix rub-onz packaging and do a few tests first if this is a new product for you.

Personality types. Map: Sacred Poetry - I. In the clatter and clamor of our lives, we need ways to connect deeply with our souls. Whenever we feel depleted, poetry invariably refreshes and refuels us. Poets are cheerleaders for our spirits. They lift us up with their enthusiasm, and inspire us to go on no matter what. They notice things we overlook in our haste and hurry, and tutor us in the art of long looking. Poets recognize spiritual teachers all around us. This poetry is sacred. April is National Poetry Month and as fine a time as ever to salute and to savor the sacred poetry of some of our favorite poets.

. — Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat. A Quick Course in Creativity. By Paul McNeese This quick course in creativity is designed to give you a platform to stand on as we look at the various ways you can handle home, social and workplace situations, job-search details and career-path decisions. Let's examine what creativity might look like. Here are some of the ways in which creativity expresses itself. Perhaps the creative idea is one that mixes and matches items or ideas that haven't been combined in just this way before. A wonderful example of this comes from Anita Roddick, who founded the Body Shop, a chain of personal care products and stores. She combined the need to help underdeveloped countries earn income with the need to avoid destroying their resources and environment.

She built her business by using natural products produced by these countries. Or, perhaps the same item could be used in a different way. Perhaps you can take a new approach that works. OK, now it's time to examine the process of creativity itself. First, there's PREPARATION. 1. The Inspiration Board. Becky Higgins - Products. Creative Writing.
