Leyteños celebrate a month-long religious festival that culminates on the feast day of Señor Santo Niño, held on the 29th of June each year. It is customary for the Visayans, both men and women, to adorn themselves with tattoos as a form of commemoration for the province’s opulent legacy. Tracing back the beginnings of such celebration to the pre-Hispanic era, the heavily painted Visayans stirred a sense of oddity, espousing an entirely rare ritual. The moniker pintados was how native painted warriors were then labeled; their tattoos were considered to be a symbol of valor, status, and power as these were only “awarded” to fighters who triumphantly protected their terrain.
