By Bill Adair Published on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010 at 4:02 p.m. After rating hundreds of claims in the 2010 election -- from TV ads, debates, interviews and mailings -- we're giving an overall Truth-O-Meter rating to the campaign.
We rate it Barely True. In a majority of claims checked this fall by PolitiFact and our eight state partners, we found a grain of truth, but it was exaggerated, twisted or distorted. (We define Barely True as a statement containing some element of truth, but it "ignores critical facts that would give a different impression. ") To see how the truth got squeezed, just compare our historical averages with our numbers since Sept. 1, when the campaign kicked into high gear. Over the three-year history of PolitiFact, we've consistently used the same methodology to choose facts to check. But since Sept. 1, True ratings have accounted for only 10 percent.

Top U.S. Newspapers On Twitter. While the Top 50 U.S. newspapers seem to be just starting to build up their fan base on Facebook, Twitter has been a priority for a while. If you were to rank the Top 25 U.S. newspapers by Twitter followers, the order would be much different than if you were to rank them by circulation. When it comes to Twitter followers, The New York Times is the top bird with more than 2.6 million followers. To illustrate how impressive this follower number is, The Wall Street Journal only has 464,591 followers in the #2 spot.
The New York Times is the ONLY newspaper from the Top 25 with more Twitter followers than print circulation. Since being wrestled back from Microsoft’s death grip, the web browser has thrived thanks to its openness. All of the popular browsers beyond IE — Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera — are either based on open-source or have a thriving community that helps develop and expand each of them. And it’s relatively easy for a user to switch between any of them. But what if that were to change? I have no direct knowledge that this is about to happen, but recent conversations have me thinking about this. What if say, Google, in their attempt to finally create a cohesive social experience, decided to forgo building yet another service and instead went for the ultimate layer: the browser?
They could do this, of course, because they make the Chrome web browser. That may sound weird, but we’re not that far away from this personalization of the browser. And shortly, Chrome will have its own Web App Store. How will that work? Oh yeah, and there’s this thing called Chrome OS which is due to launch shortly. Smartphone Makers Gain More Revenues from Streaming Services Than Download Stores: Study. Most mobile carriers have a mobile store, filled with much of the same music you can find on iTunes. But do you ever shop there?
According to a new study, mobile operators should quit pushing their own music download stores on users and instead partner with music streaming services to increase revenues and build customer loyalty. Research firm Informa Telecoms & Media said Monday that such partnerships could help boost revenues, spur smartphone sales, and increase data usage. A typical Western European carrier with around 20 million customers, the study reports, could see revenue rise $109 million per year from new users.
"Our research shows a large Western European operator could generate millions of revenue per year by partnering with a third-party music service -- significantly more than they would gain from offering their own service," Informa analyst Giles Cottle told Reuters. How the Top 100 Colleges & Universities are Using Twitter - U&C. As Twitter use has exploded, it has become an increasingly important communications tool for organizations of all kinds.
To understand the effect it has had on educational institutions, UniversitiesAndColleges.org has conducted a study on the Twitter usage of the top 100 colleges and universities in the United States. Table of Contents Data and Methodology The top 100 colleges were determined by the US News and World Report 2010 College Rankings. Data was collected during September 2009 from Twitter.com with additional statistics calculated using TweetStats.
As the data was collected in the past, follower counts and user statistics have since changed. We believe these findings still provide an accurate picture of Twitter usage at top educational institutions. To narrow the scope of our investigation, only accounts officially affiliated with university administrations were included. The data collected on each top 100 college Twitter account was the following: Usage Trends Popularity vs. Dr. Gridlock - Track Bikeshare use in real-time. With Capital Bikeshare still in its first month of existence, stations are still being rolled out, and observers are gauging its success and considering whether the system might work for them. So this nifty map, which updates in real-time to show which stations are most used and at what times of the day is quite interesting--especially because it works for bikesharing systems in DC and around the globe.
The bikes circulate naturally, making the placement of stations and effectiveness of the system tied to people's travel patterns. A balanced system will achieve something close to an equilibrium. For example, I've noticed that when I leave work late, the downtown stations are sometimes out of bikes, because people are checking them out and dropping them off in residential neighborhoods after work, while few are arriving downtown via bike after business hours. In London, 16 percent of their 3450 bikes are currently in use. --Luke Rosiak. College career centers aren’t always a wasteland. Washington, DC | Sources Tell 9NEWS NOW Michelle Rhee Will Step Down As Chancellor of Schools.
WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Michelle Rhee announced Wednesday she will resign as DC Chancellor of Schools, answering the question on many peoples' minds after Vincent Gray defeated Andrian Fenty last month in the DC mayoral primary election. "Reforms will continue," Rhee said, in a somewhat elated tone. Deputy Chancellor Kaya Henderson will replace Rhee in the interim. "I have known and worked with Kaya for the past three and a half years, and I can tell you, she is an unbelievable candidate," Rhee said. Henderson thanked Rhee for the opportunity to continue what she called the "immense progress," they teamed up to make in the past three years. "I've worked in the DC school system for the past 13 years and I never imagined we could reach such heights," Henderson said. Rhee's three years as chancellor of schools was contentious after she helped restructure DC schools; among accolades from her allies and criticism from groups like teacher's unions.
Rhee will stay on until the end of the month. Nick Denton, Gawker Media, and journalism’s future. For years after starting Gawker Media, the online publishing network, in 2002, Nick Denton ran the company out of his apartment, in SoHo. “He said, ‘If you run it out of your house, then no one expects anything,’ ” Denton’s friend Fredrik Carlström, the film producer and adman, told me. “ ‘If you have an office, people want stuff.
They want cell phones, lunch breaks, beer on Fridays.’ ” Gawker Media was a deliberately fly-by-night operation: incorporated in Budapest, where a small team of programmers still works, and relying on elegantly jaded bloggers who considered themselves outsiders with nothing to lose. Early contributors tell stories about bounced checks, and receiving payment straight from the A.T.M. The arrangement, many assumed, was a convenient hedge against potential libel claims. “You missed all the excitement,” Denton said, bounding over to greet me. Denton acknowledged “the irony of us lecturing,” as he put it, and asked, “Is there Gawker ethics?
Has Online Sharing Spurred a New Offline Sharing Economy? "Sharing" may be one of the key elements of our digital world - sharing files, sharing links, sharing content. But has the emphasis on sharing online changed the way in which we share offline? Results of a study by Shareable Magazine and Latitude Research (led by Kim Gaskins) contend that indeed it has. A survey of over 500 Web users finds that people who share online are more apt to share offline, in part the study argues, because they've learned to trust each other online. And the impetus behind this sharing isn't simply a matter of saving money. The same number of respondents claimed they share in order to make the world a better place as said they share to save money (although two-thirds did say they were more likely to share if they could make money from doing so). It's part of a move the authors of the research trace from an ownership economy to an access economy. Share and Share Alike Some of the other findings include: Opportunities for Social Startups.
Fox News, MSNBC 'Not Interested' in Rick Sanchez, Even Post-Apology | TheWrap.com. The disgraced news anchor apologizes for comments that got him fired, but it looks like he's out of options on cable news Rick Sanchez broke his silence Wednesday with a standard apology, but it won't be enough to land him a job at Fox News or MSNBC, which are "not interested" in hiring the disgraced news anchor, TheWrap has learned. Six days after the satellite radio interview that got him fired from CNN, Sanchez called his comments "inartful," adding: "I sincerely extend this apology to anyone else whom I may have offended. " Still, despite internet rumors and chatter that Fox News would be a natural place for Sanchez to land on his feet, a network spokesperson told TheWrap that Fox is "not interested" in taking him on.
A spokesperson for MSNBC, where Sanchez worked prior to his CNN stint, also said their network is "not interested" in the anchor. "Closed on our lakefront home today," she wrote. Sanchez's full statement is below: "I look forward to my next step with great anticipation. Biden: If I hear one more GOP budget gripe, 'I am going to strangle them' - The Hill's Blog Briefing Room. Vice President Biden jokingly expressed his frustration toward Republicans on Tuesday, accusing them of having insincere concerns about the budget deficit. Biden jokingly said that GOP protests about the need for a balanced budget made him want to strangle them, which the vice president quickly clarified was a figure of speech.
“If I hear one more Republican tell me about balancing the budget, I am going to strangle them,” Biden said at a fundraiser in Minnesota, according to a pool report. “To the press, that’s a figure of speech.” President Obama and other members of the administration have ridiculed Republicans as trying to have it both ways on budget issues. For all the GOP's complaints about the ballooning deficit over the past 20 months, Democrats charge, their plan to extend all tax cuts for top earners would add hundreds of billions to the debt.
“These guys have absolutely no credibility, no credibility on debt,” Biden said. Broadcast Yourself. Confirmation of the office's existence came in a perhaps typically laid back San Francisco style. Twitter communications team member Carolyn Penner told us by email, "We have some sales folks who work from NYC, and we thought it'd be nice to give them somewhere to sit. :)" Update: Despite my reading of the statements from these two Twitter team members, and Twitter COO Dick Costolo's May statement that New York or Los Angeles were the next places Twitter would probably set up offices, the company wrote to say that they have not in fact set up a New York office yet.
"To clarify...," Penner wrote us, "We just have the one office - in SF. In NY, we have a temporary area in rental space for a handful of people who are based there. " Meet the new Twitter.com. Discovery Hostage Crisis Proves We're All Reporters Now - Technorati Blogging. It's well known that Twitter is an outstanding source for news. We saw this last summer during the #iranelection fiasco, during the DC #snowpocalypse last Winter, and just yesterday during the #discovery hostage crisis in Silver Spring, Maryland.
And while Twitter is great for news any day of the week, it's crises such as these that truly provide a glimpse into our new media world and allow us to participate in the news itself. Social media has revolutionized the news business--there's no doubt about that. But taking a close look at the way the crisis developed yesterday shows that the way we process and participate in news has not only changed, but it's changed for the better. News of the crisis first broke on Twitter. Soon the Twittersphere was taken over by #discovery tweets. Other social media played a role as well.
