Could you tell us where you're from and how you got started in the field? Thanks for having me.

Q You incorporate complex shapes and patterns into most of your illustrations, what exactly draws you to use this type of style? I drew from a very early age, and detail has always been one of my favorite things. Q On the side you also create these amazingly detailed polymer clay models, do you believe designers should take up hobbies like this and not always focus on digital art? Thanks again for having me. Today I'm going to be showing you how to create an elegant female portrait using complimentary colors with a backlight effect. You'll learn several tips along the way to help enhance and flatter your female illustrations, which are comparable with many cosmetic tips! You can find the source files in the directory labeled 'source' that came in the files that you downloaded. You may wish to look through them briefly before we begin. Introduction Today we're going to be using a this stock image provided by the wonderful Tasastock as the perfect pose for this strikingly beautiful portrait. There are two reasons why I have selected this stock image.

Step 1 First thing is to open the image in Photoshop so we can modify it. I don't want to amend the contrast too much on the image as it will exaggerate the distorted and modified skin tones to the point I am unable to see the "natural" shadows and highlights. Step 2 The color changes will be very subtle. Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Step 9. Tracing a Vector Face From a Reference Photo. A few times a each month we revisit some of our reader’s favorite posts from throughout the history of Vectortuts+.

This tutorial by Jesse Hora was first published on October 20th 2009. There are numerous ways that you could approach using a reference photo in illustration, an obvious option being to 'trace' the photo. Since there are so many microscopic details in a photograph you have to make numerous decisions on how you want the image to look in the end. Do you want it to look photorealistic? All of these decisions will result in the look and style of your final image, and your work as a whole. Introduction Some people may think it's so easy to trace a photo, and that this tutorial is useless. The basic idea of this tutorial is to showcase how using the the process of tracing the basic shapes and contours of a photograph, as opposed to using predominately vector lines with strokes, as many beginning illustrators do, will result in a desirable, realistic yet stylized image.

Concept First, I did a sketch using a small hard brush -5 px- with low opacity -20%-.

I use to work with very clean sketches, using the rubber to delete dirty traces and to obtain a clean line. With it, I have a clear reference when I start to add color. Then, I start to create layers of color, using sometimes false colors like red for a better visualization. For to paint the eyes, I used different layers, for the eye lashes, the iris and the light spots. The next step was to paint the face volumes. I have an habit: when I paint white skins I use always the same tones and when I finish it, I appeal to variations for modify the tones. Then, I started to work on lips, one of the key point of the picture. Magical Illustrations by Alan Maia.
