2010 World Clock. Humans Don’t Just Have Five Senses. Today I found out humans have a lot more than five senses. It turns out, there are at least nine senses and most researchers think there are more like twenty-one or so. Just for reference, the commonly held definition of a “sense” is “any system that consists of a group of sensory cell types that respond to a specific physical phenomenon and that corresponds to a particular group of regions within the brain where the signals are received and interpreted.” The commonly held human senses are as follows: Sight: This technically is two senses given the two distinct types of receptors present, one for color (cones) and one for brightness (rods).Taste: This is sometimes argued to be five senses by itself due to the differing types of taste receptors (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami), but generally is just referred to as one sense.

For those who don’t know, umami receptors detect the amino acid glutamate, which is a taste generally found in meat and some artificial flavoring. Bonus Facts: 5 Essential Apps for Your Business's Facebook Fan Page. This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

If you've already searched for some Fan Page inspiration and undertaken the task of building a custom landing page for your business's Facebook presence, you may now be in the market for some features that will further engage your fans. A nice feature of the modern social web is that it's modular. You can plug in and customize pre-made pieces of software (often created by other users or companies), and mix and match what works best for you without a lot of technical know-how.

Facebook works the same way with apps. Many Facebook apps are built for casual use, like the social games and quizzes you may see your friends using in their personal feeds. 1. We've already discussed how the Static FBML app can be used to make your Fan Page a unique destination. 2. 3. 4. Sometimes you just need a little feedback. 5. How to Incorporate Badges Into Your Website. It seems some people will do just about anything to earn a trophy, even an imaginary one.

In April, Parker Liautaud, a 15-year-old from England, became the first to earn the Last Degree badge when he used Foursquare from the North Pole. Foursquare, a location-based social network, rewards its users with a wide variety of virtual badges for using the service on their cell phones from various destinations. Just like the traditional badges used by the Boy Scouts, these digital icons serve as a way to mark achievements.

But instead of getting a badge for, say, learning first aid, online users typically earn virtual awards for using a company's services. For instance, if someone uses Foursquare at five different airports, he or she receives a Jetsetter badge. Video game designers have long used techniques such as badges and trophies to keep players engaged, says Kim. Zichermann made sure to include a function that lets customers easily boast about their badges on Facebook and Twitter. 7 A/B Testing Resources for Startups and Solo Developers. This post originally appeared on Dyn.com, a world leader in managed DNS, powering the best brands on the web including Gowalla, Mashable, Twitter, Wikia and more.

A/B testing is one of the easiest ways to figure out whether one specific variable of your website is working. It could be a button color, a bit of web copy, an image — something extremely finite that may (or may not) have a measurable impact on desired actions, be they conversions or a simple click-through. In an A/B test, the variable changes as users visit the page; user actions are recorded and analyzed; and the developer (or startup) is able to take action based on the results. What is A/B Testing, Exactly?

What's the Best Way to A/B Test? Also, make sure you've got enough traffic to make an A/B test worthwhile. 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 1. 2. 9 Things I Learned In 9 Years as a CEO – Part 1 - Business Advice - Employees. Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page {sergey, page}@cs.stanford.edu Computer Science Department, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305 Abstract In this paper, we present Google, a prototype of a large-scale search engine which makes heavy use of the structure present in hypertext. Google is designed to crawl and index the Web efficiently and produce much more satisfying search results than existing systems. The prototype with a full text and hyperlink database of at least 24 million pages is available at To engineer a search engine is a challenging task. Search engines index tens to hundreds of millions of web pages involving a comparable number of distinct terms. 1.

Vitae. Social Media, Can it Actually Enhance Education? Most people think of social media as something that hinders learning, and perhaps rightfully so. Students who spend hours every day on Facebook probably aren’t allocating enough time to homework.

However, social media can be used to engage students in the learning process, and it can bring some pizzazz to the classroom. It’s increasingly becoming an essential part of a teacher’s curriculum. Let’s take a look at how teachers are using social media to enhance the learning experience: Facebook Groups: Teachers can create a Facebook group for their class or for a particular class project and ask students to join the group. Social media has become part of students’ every day lives. This is a guest post by Brian Jenkins who has been a member of BrainTrack’s writing team for two years.
