Prior to the 2006 soy moratorium, in which international commodity traders signed a voluntary pledge not to trade in soy from recently deforested land, about 30 percent of soy was planted in recently cleared areas ; by 2015 that figure had fallen to less than 1 percent. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), a treaty with 182 signatories that seeks to block trafficking of endangered flora and fauna, has helped reduce trade in endangered Amazonian timber since 2003.

Wealthy nations and nongovernmental groups can also expand their support for Brazil's Amazon Fund and help finance conservation projects.
