12 Important Attributes of The 21st Century Learners. Megaskills: Building Our Children's Character and Achievement for School and Life is a wonderful book from the popular author Dorothy Rich. In this grandeur work Rich provided several tips and pieces of advice that were proven to help children develop the basic values and character strengths they need to succeed in school and beyond. It includes an emphasis on focusing attention and thinking toward a goal - to help build critical abilities essential in the age of information. Being impressed by the content of Megaskills I went ahead and created this graphic. I have included the main skills Rich tackled in details in her book .
10 Techy Icebreakers for The 21st Century Teacher. Here are some great icebreakers you can work on using technology : 1- Self PortraitHave your students draw themselves. After they have done this, collect the papers and hang them up for the whole class to see. Now have students try to guess who the artists was for each picture. Here are the web tools to do that : 2- Video/ audio introductions Encourage students to record a short video clip in which they introduce themselves to their peers. The teacher generates a list of words related to a topic to be taught. 5- Prior Knowledge check Giving multiple choice tests or true and false quizzes before introducing a topic or reading engages students, activates a student’s prior knowledge, and will encourage the sharing of information and resources. 6- Personalize it Teacher writes the topic to be taught on the board and then talks about how the topic relates to them by using a personal reference or story.
Linda_darlinghammond_article1. Math, PBL and 21st Century Learning for All Students. Considering project-based learning as a way to teach 21st century competencies? Or perhaps you have already used PBL in your schools and want support for your discussions with administrators, parents or board members? In either case, it might be helpful to know about the strong research evidence that PBL, when supported by good professional development, can in turn support the teaching and learning of 21st century skills significantly better than more traditional alternatives. Sometimes skeptics will argue that for certain subjects (e.g., math) or some types of students (e.g., lower performers) are harder to teach using PBL. They might enjoy this video of students building a house as an example of good teaching -- but not necessarily an example that could or should be followed.
Math teachers and teachers of lower-performing students do have unique challenges for teaching 21st century skills. Evidence from West Virginia Let's look at the data. Suggested Resources. PSA: Please Stop Saying '21st Century Education' | Education on GOOD. If you ever find yourself sitting in a meeting—or listening to a politician's speech—about education reform, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll hear mention of how schools need to ensure kids are "21st century learners," who are acquiring "21st century skills," in a "21st century classroom. " But in the thirteenth year of the 21st century, what does any of this "21st century education" talk mean—and is it even happening?
Last September, educator and author Grant Lichtman set out on a quest to discover the answer. He packed up his Prius and spent the next 89 days on a 10,000 mile research tour visiting 64 American schools—both public and private—in 21 states. During his time on the road Lichtman talked to 600-700 educators about how they're disrupting (or not) "the industrial-age mindset" that's driven America's education system for the past century. Ultimately, says Lichtman, education innovation has to be about "preparing our students for their future, not our past.
" Education and 21st Century Presentation. Professional blog | 21st Century Educator. Listen to the two songs linked below, and ask yourself, is this the message we should be sending our children? After the horrible rape case in the now infamous town of Steubenville, I have been thinking about what could possibly have made this act seem justified by the boys who committed it, and although I do not think we can lay all of the blame on popular media, as it is a reflection of our culture, some of the blame must lie there.
I listened to this song, at the request of my son, and I was quickly horrified. It reminded me of a song I knew growing up, and how my uncritical mind had been deceived into liking this song, until a friend quietly pointed out (while I was singing the song) what the lyrics to the song meant. I remember the moment that opened my mind, and started me thinking about music more critically. My friend and I were walking from Koerner Library to the Student Union building on UBC campus, as part of our weekly Safewalk shift, and I started to hum, and then sing. The Inside-Out School: A 21st Century Learning Model. The Inside-Out School: A 21st Century Learning Model by Terry Heick As a follow-up to our 9 Characteristics of 21st Century Learning we developed in 2009, we have developed an updated framework, The Inside-Out Learning Model.
The goal of the model is simple enough–not pure academic proficiency, but instead authentic self-knowledge, diverse local and global interdependence, adaptive critical thinking, and adaptive media literacy. By design this model emphasizes the role of play, diverse digital and physical media, and a designed interdependence between communities and schools. The attempted personalization of learning occurs through new actuators and new notions of local and global citizenship. An Inside-Out School returns the learners, learning, and “accountability” away from academia and back to communities. The 9 Domains Of the Inside-Out Learning Model 1. How To Prepare Students For 21st Century Survival. 7 Skills Students Will Always Need by Jennifer Rita Nichols Ed note: This post has been updated from a 2013 post. As educators, we constantly strive to prepare our students for the ‘real world’ that exists around them. We teach them how to read, write, and calculate. Then, of course, there are the less tangible skills we teach; such as how to work in a team, think critically, and be curious about the things they encounter each day. We want to prepare them to lead productive and successful lives once they leave us and enter into the realm of adulthood. But what lies ahead for our students in the future?
Tony Wagner of Harvard University worked to uncover the 7 survival skills required for the 21st century. We may not know exactly what lies ahead for our students in the future, but we have the advantage of knowing what skills they will need once they get there. Pay Attention - THIS is 21st Century Education! | Alive and Learning. 21st Century Skills: Deeper Learning is Essential Ingredient for Success. Deeper learning will ensure students possess transferable knowledge, or the ability to use their knowledge and skills to solve problems and navigate new situations. As a 21st century skill set, it should be a core element of the public education academic experience.
A recent report from the National Research Council, Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century argues that when facilitated through teaching and learning of academic subjects, this approach to learning pushes students beyond rote memorization of facts and procedure, and prepares them to succeed in work and life. This opportunity ensures that we are teaching and assessing the skillsets that we want our students to acquire as a majority of states work to implement the Common Core State Standards. Emphasizing deeper learning will require several shifts, in teaching methods, curricula, and assessments much like the shifts that are necessary to ensure success for Common Core.
Cool Graphic on Learning in The 21st Century. As I was checking the backlinks to Educational Technology and Mobile Learning I came across this resource from ISDIPED. The resource is basically a syllabus somebody designed for teaching about Media Selection. It really impresses me how well-structured and properly referenced it is. 10 Ways To Fake A 21st Century Classroom. How To Fake A 21st Century Classroom by Terry Heick Ed note: This post has been updated from a 2013 post because I loved the original so much and it made some people mad, which is always good 21st century learning isn’t a trend as much as a reality. It’s 2015 (almost 2016), so whatever you’re doing in your classroom right now is technically 21st century learning. Semantics aside, we all can improve, and many of us are being held accountable for improvement by administrators, blogs, and the local PLC to “bring the next generation into the 21st century.” 10 Ways To Fake A 21st Century Classroom 1. Projects are what students do in the 21st century. One of the most powerful ways to employ a 21st century learning tone and process is to start big–with broad, sweeping projects that change the world, and give students constant opportunity to revise thinking, innovate, design, publish, and curate because this is what modern students do, right?

It's not rational, but I'll admit that whenever I hear "21st century classroom" or "21st century skills" -- I tense up. Why? Because we are starting the 13th year of this "future" century. It's empty phraseology designed to sound like we are preparing for the future when we are already living in that future; and no one believes that what passes for a typical classroom today will be the classroom experience even 10 years from now, let alone for the next 87 years. We can't know what the classroom will look or feel like. We do know, however, that most school districts are organized to deliver education that inhibits rather than encourages innovation.
Does Google refer to its corporate aspirations to be a "21st century" company? It's time to move on and work together to develop education systems that meet students where they live and provide a relevant education to develop cognitive and non-cognitive skills. Nine questions about ’21st Century curriculum’ If you have heard the phrase “21st Century curriculum” and wondered exactly what that is, you aren’t alone. Here, veteran educator and curriculum expert Marion Brady explains. Brady, who was a classroom teacher for years, has written history and world culture textbooks (Prentice-Hall), professional books, numerous nationally distributed columns (many are available here), and courses of study.
His 2011 book “What’s Worth Learning” asks and answer this question: What knowledge is absolutely essential for every learner? His course of study for secondary-level students, called Connections: Investigating Reality, is free for downloading here. By Marion Brady Willie Sutton, asked why he robbed banks, is supposed to have replied, “Because that’s where the money is.” Willie said those weren’t his words—that some newspaper reporter had put them in his mouth—but it makes a good story. “That’s where the money is” is also a major reason for Wall Street’s growing interest in public education. “No.” YouTube. A Must Have Poster about 21st Century Learning Skills. I have just finished working on a graphic that I have made specifically for readers of Educational Technology and Mobile Learning ( of course anyone else is allowed to use it ). I am not the kind of guy to ask for favors in return for freebies I publish here.
I honestly hate it and I have seen this practice in different blogs and websites. They tell you you can for instance download a certain PDF or eBook for free provided you register with them using your email or to like them on Facebook..etc. I would understand it from bloggers outside the educational arena but I can not swallow it when I see someone claiming to be an educator committed to the cause of education and yet providing such kind of services. I have recently been working on certain eBooks and other things ( let it be surprise ) that I will give you as a gift for the new year.

Game-Based Learning Can Support 21st Century Skills. By Justin Marquis Ph.D., OnlineUniversities.com I recently attended the Serious Play conference in Redmond, Washington (the home of Microsoft), and one thing that stood out to me was all the talk about “21st Century skills,” and how game-based learning (GBL) could help students acquire them.
The problem with the 21st Century skills concept is that education may not be ready for it just yet. While the Common Core and NETS standards both address these kinds of skills to a certain extent, education does very little to actually support their development. In fact, the educational model that we currently employ often works to stifle exactly these kinds of competencies. But what are these magical 21st Century Skills?
