With consumers, retailers and Mother Earth all pressing for change, lacking a sustainability plan is no longer an option for any decent brand. But from here the choices become more complex and difficult. It’s fully recyclable and it also contains recycled plastic. We’ve been pioneering the use of food grade recycled plastic ever since 2003 when we first introduced 25% post consumer recycled content (rPET) to our bottles. We then took it all the way to 100% recycled plastic in 2007. We had to temporarily reduce the content down to 35% in 2011, because the quality of the recycled plastic we were using had declined to an unacceptable level: we want our packaging to be sustainable, but we also want our smoothies to look their best.

Paper, for example, is not necessarily environmentally-preferable just because it comes from a sustainably-harvested forest. An environmental claim that cannot be substantiated by easily accessible supporting information or by a reliable third-party certification. Common examples are facial tissues or toilet tissue products that claim various percentages of post-consumer recycled content without providing evidence. A claim that is so poorly defined or broad that its real meaning is likely to be misunderstood by the consumer. A product that, through either words or images, gives the impression of third-party endorsement where no such endorsement exists; fake labels, in other words.

When creating traditional print materials the toxicity of ink and paper and the sheer quantity of paper produced need to be considered. In addition to these factors there are other phases of the life cycle of products that need to be examined. To really determine the sustainability or carbon footprint of a product, one needs to follow it through its entire life cycle. Questions need to be raised about how much fuel is being used for shipping, what the final end product is, how long the life cycle is, and how long before the product ends up as waste. In Green Graphic Design author Brian Dougherty asks graphic designers to start at the end of the process instead of the beginning. In Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things authors William McDonough and Michael Braungart make a similar case for how sustainable practices need to be implemented.
