La leggendaria artista americana si è calata nel ruolo di numerosi personaggi e ha dato vita a tante identità diverse, imitando chiunque, dalle libraie sexy, ai clown, alle star di Hollywood. L'unica cosa che questi personaggi hanno in comune è che non si tratta mai di lei: l'artista enigmatica ha un rifiuto verso tutto ciò che è ovvio. La sua nuova mostra — la prima dal 2012 — ci permette di dare di nuovo uno sguardo ai suoi scatti di makeup e costumi eccentrici, e si tratta probabilmente di una delle più personali fino ad ora. L'artista 62enne ha infatti deciso di affrontare la sua femminilità e come essa sta cambiando nel tempo. Gli ultimi ritratti, che ricordano la sua storica serie Untitled Film Stills ideata tra il 1977 e il 1980, rappresentano gli stereotipi femminili dei B movies e del cinema d'essai del '900.
