Scientific and Medical Libraries The New York Times dubbed 2012 “The Year of the MOOC,” and it has since become one of the hottest topics in education. Time magazine said that free MOOCs open the door to the “Ivy League for the Masses.” Two of the world’s leading MOOCs, Coursera and Udacity, earned venture capital in the amounts of $22 million and $15 million, respectively. Educators, politicians, and yes, librarians, are taking note of this disruptive educational technology trend, and the future it holds for the training for our future scientists, doctors, nurses, engineers, and others entering STEM fields. I remember back my library school days, how librarians were fearing and struggling to redefine their role in “search” in the Age of Google, and now, they face another challenge, finding their role aiding professors and students in the Era of the MOOC.

Video Library Our new educational effort is called Pivot Interactives. The new Pivot Interactives website offers a powerful platform for students to learn science concepts and science process skills. It contains classroom-ready activities with integrated data tables and graphing capabilities, teacher-modifiable student instructions, and allows teachers to create classes to assign and grade student work. In addition, the platform features more video arrays with the Pivot Player interactive tools, and a user-interface that allows users to change variables within the videos, such as the mass of objects or frequency of a wave. Here are the changes underway: During late summer and fall 2017, many of the videos on the Direct Measurement Video website will be migrated to the Pivot Interactives site and will no longer be freely available.

Open educational resources UNESCO believes that universal access to high quality education is key to the building of peace, sustainable social and economic development, and intercultural dialogue. Open Educational Resources (OER) provide a strategic opportunity to improve the quality of education as well as facilitate policy dialogue, knowledge sharing and capacity building. Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning or research materials that are in the public domain or released with an intellectual property license that allows for free use, adaptation, and distribution. Massive Open Online Courses Are Multiplying at a Rapid Pace That’s what everyone is trying to figure out. Many places offer MOOCs, and more will. But Coursera, Udacity and edX are defining the form as they develop their brands. Coursera casts itself as a “hub” — Dr. Ng’s word — for learning and networking. The learning comes gratis from an impressive roster of elites offering a wide range of courses, from computer science to philosophy to medicine.

Direct Measurement Videos Direct Measurement Videos are short, high-quality videos of real events that allow students to easily explore physical phenomena. Many of the videos are paired with classroom-ready activities that integrate videos into the introductory mechanics curriculum. Ready to explore? Browse the Video Library Want to learn more? Read about getting started with Direct Measurement Videos. Open Education The aim of this scoreboard is to highlight the huge potential that European institutions have in the world of OER and to help visualize this potential by compiling the existing European-provided MOOCs available on different open websites. European MOOCs are those provided by European institutions, regardless of the platform that hosts them. All of the MOOCs accounted for in the scoreboard are also listed in the MOOC aggregator on this website. Please refer to our FAQ for more information about how this scoreboard is built, what are the sources of information and how the visualization works.

MOOCs Forum Overview This title is no longer available. MOOCs Forum is the only international publication dedicated exclusively to shaping the future development, design, and deployment of massive, open, online courses (MOOCs).
