Dungeness crabs threatened by, you guessed it, climate change When it comes to American culinary institutions, the Dungeness crabs that are hauled ashore from California to Washington state every winter season are the crustacean equivalents of apple pie. The bountiful crab meat is a holiday staple in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. When crabbing was suspended in the fall by an algae outbreak, journalists flocked to docks to produce lead news stories — just as they did when crabbing was restricted following a 2007 oil spill. Research published this month could give a crab connoisseur a case of acid reflux. Scientists reported in the journal Marine Biology that ocean acidification, which is caused when carbon dioxide pollution dissolves into oceans, can kill and stunt young crabs, potentially jeopardizing whole populations. Scientists grew eggs and larvae from Puget Sound crabs in water containing pH resembling current and future conditions. West Coast waters are more prone to acidification than other regions.
Keystone leaks and reminds us why we’re glad there isn’t an XL pipeline out there A major section of the original Keystone pipeline is out of commission after an oil spill near the pipeline was detected in South Dakota on April 2. The spill, estimated at 187 gallons of crude oil, serves as a reminder of the risks that pipelines pose — and that with the Obama administration’s rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline proposal, we’ve likely avoided the potential for an even bigger, more disastrous spill. Part of the original argument against Keystone XL was that eventually, the proposed pipeline was bound to spill. The recent oil spill was discovered, of course, by TransCanada’s state-of-the-art spill detection technology — oh, what’s that? Apparently, a South Dakota landowner first noticed signs of a spill and informed TransCanada of the leak. TransCanada says that “no significant impact to the environment has been observed” from the April 2 spill.

Les grandes compagnies (Total, Shell, Exxon, Repsol, BP etc.) et opérateurs des marchés du pétrole et du gaz en eaux profondes se réuniront à Pau du 5 au 7 avril au sommet « MCE Deepwater Development» pour mettre en place des stratégies visant à exploiter les réserves d’hydrocarbures de la planète et des océans jusqu’à leur dernière goutte. Un sommet pour forer toujours plus loin, toujours plus profond, pour toujours plus de profit… Tout juste ratifié, l’Accord de Paris et son objectif de maintenir le réchauffement « bien en-deçà des 2°C » court le risque d’être noyé en eaux profondes. Oregon tells rail companies to keep oil deliveries secret Oregon transportation officials are doing everything in their power to keep the state’s residents in the dark about the movement of crude-filled, explosion-prone rail cars. The Oregonian won a two-month battle in March when the state Department of Justice ruled that the state Department of Transportation was of course legally required to provide information it receives about the oil shipments to the daily newspaper. Failing to do so “could infringe on the public’s ability to assess the local and statewide risks,” a Justice Department attorney advised. “Risks shmisks,” the Transportation Department replied. It heavily redacted reports it had received from the rail companies before releasing them to the journalists — and then kicked the intrasigence up a notch. Keeping this kind of information secret won’t just make it hard for residents to make decisions about where they can live and travel safely.

Lundi soir, les flammes gagnaient de trente à quarante mètres par minute sur le front de l’incendie tandis qu’un temps chaud et sec prévu pour durer encore au moins 48 heures compliquait le travail des pompiers. En Inde, on ne fait pas état d’incendies et le gouvernement central communique le moins possible sur la terrible sécheresse qui frappe de nombreuses régions depuis deux ans. La mousson est attendue avec impatience alors que beaucoup de récoltes ont été perdue du fait de la sécheresse.
