US film of parachuting beavers found after 65 years (it's OK, they survived) ... More than half a century after a group of beavers were parachuted into the Idaho backcountry, the state’s department of fish and game has uncovered film footage of the quirky wildlife management moment. In the 1940s the department was trying to deal with an overpopulation of beavers in some regions when wildlife managers settled on a novel idea. They captured beavers and other fur-bearing rodents, packed them into boxes, attached parachutes and dropped them from a plane into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Boise state public radio reports that a film made around 1950 showed the infamous beaver drops, but it had long been lost. Recently, fish and game historian Sharon Clark found the fragile film, which had been mislabeled and stored in the wrong file. Now it has been digitized and released by the Idaho Historical Society and the department of fish and game on YouTube. Animal lovers, take heart: it appears all beavers survived their flying adventures unharmed.
Att anpassa språket - vad innebär det? - Mia Smith En utveckling av engelskan på högstadiet är att man lägger alltmer fokus på anpassningen av språket. Vem talar vi med? Vem skriver vi texten för? Hur talar vi när vi talar med olika personer? I muntlig och skriftlig interaktion i olika sammanhang kan eleven uttrycka sig enkelt och begripligt samt i någon mån anpassat till syfte, mottagare och situation. (Kunskapskrav för E i år 9 i engelska) När jag talar med eleverna om detta brukar jag ta upp extrema hälsningen. Ett annat sätt att påvisa stilen är att använda så kallade clines, gradvisa skalor. Det jag vill påvisa är vad eleverna redan kan. Ofta hamnar jag i slutändan av året i läget att några elever har lite mer att visa, lite mer att ge som de inte lyckats få fram under året. Det här upplägget brukar få eleverna att visa sina bästa sidor. Kanske är det här ett upplägg som fler lärare vill använda nu under sista veckorna på terminen?

Genom att arbeta med tex Kahoot eller i detta fall Zaption.com kan du på ett enkelt sätt få en tydlig bild av vad dina elever har lärt sig och vad du behöver rikta in din undervisning på. Idag blir inlägget inte i textform. Titta på filmen så får du allt du behöver veta om hur Zaption fungerar och framförallt hur du kan använda det i undervisningen. Att skriva för en mottagare Det är fantastiskt roligt och värdefullt att digitala verktyg öppnar upp möjligheten för alla människor att kommunicera på ett snabbare och enklare sätt än vad som var möjligt för tio år sedan. Men är det bara jag som är lite bekymmersam över hur lärare publicerar elevers texter, bilder och inte minst tal där elever både hörs och syns i egen person utan att fundera på, ta hänsyn till och respektera deras personliga integritet? Eleverna blir mer motiverade att skriva om det finns en mottagare. Vi lärare måste såklart vara lyhörda för vad eleven vill nu, men bara det räcker inte. Vi måste också ta hänsyn till vad eleven vill i framtiden. Därför lämpar sig en del uppgifter för en sorts publicering, medan andra texter överhuvudtaget inte alls är lämpliga att publicera. Ytterligare en variant är att spela in ljud och/eller bild och lägga upp på Youtube, men någonstans här börjar jag vackla. … With great power comes great responsibility!
Questioning That Deepens Comprehension Editor's note: This post is co-authored by Nancy Frey, a Professor of Literacy in Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a credentialed special educator, reading specialist, and administrator. Questions are a common way for teachers to check for understanding, right? The answer we’re looking for is "yes." What does the text say? What does the text say? The questions in this category require students to think literally about the text. The amount of time that teachers spend at the literal level will vary based on student responses. Questions at this level could include: What is the relationship between the narrator and the main character? How does the text work? When students have a grasp of the text at the literal level, we move to the structural level. For example, questions at the structural level could include: What is the _______ referenced by the narrator? What does the text mean? Questions at the inferential level could include: What does the text inspire you to do?
H is for Holidays And summer has finally come and once again it’s this time of the year when me and my blog go on holiday. I started blogging like eight years ago and you might think that after spending all these years writing an average of two posts weekly, I might be dry for ideas. I am not. I promise I’ll be back some time in September with new ideas. This blog is always growing and changing, and hopefully it’s becoming better and a more useful place for you to visit. Ämnesövergripande arbete i engelska och bild För några veckor sedan såg jag på facebook ett kanonupplägg som Li Throbäck och hennes kollega Marita Klang lagt ut. De undervisar i engelska respektive bild på Norreportskolan i Ystad. Jag blev imponerad av deras arbete och erbjöd dem att skriva om deras arbete här på bloggen, vilket jag alltså gör nu! Projektet är ämnesövergripande för årskurs nio mellan engelska och bild. På engelsklektionerna har eleverna arbetat med temat Love. I temat har de så klart läst texter om kärlek etc. Li och Marita är mycket nöjda med sitt projekt och ser stora fördelar med att arbeta tillsammans och hjälpas åt. Nedan följer projektetsarbetsgång. Att befästa eller ifrågasätta stereotyper - Mia Smith Nu har jag gjort det igen, det som vi alla gör. Jag har återanvänt en gammal uppgift som jag vet funkat bra tidigare utan att egentligen tänka igenom riktigt noga ifall jag behöver omarbeta den, eller anpassa den något. Jo, det blev ganska bra.
