Mapping the Real World We all think we know how the world looks. But do our maps of the world always reflect what is most important? Much has been said, for instance, about the astonishing economic growth witnessed by China over the past few decades. What if we could produce more visually informative maps? As it turns out, we can. Maps such as the one in Figure 1 (Right) are known as cartograms. In addition to providing shock and alarm, cartograms also offer statistical advantages over regular maps in visualizing spatial data. A quick glance at this map would indicate a landslide victory for Donald Trump. If, instead, we used a cartogram based on the electoral votes of each state, to represent this same data, we would obtain a much more visually representative portrayal of the election results. The diffusion-based cartogram (link) has largely been the most popular cartogram in use. As an analogy, consider spraying some perfume in one corner of a room. If you haven't worked any mapping websites, operation might not be obvious to you. To help you scale this short (we hope) learning curve, we have compiled this list of common tasks. Note that this is an interactive guide. Let's get started! Navigation Chances are, you aren't interested in the area we present to you by default. To move the map, drag it by clicking and holding down the left mouse button (or only mouse button if on a Mac.) That's all well and good you say, but the world is a big place. The text search box works for street addresses, cities, and even landmarks. Zoom On the upper left side of the viewer content area are the zoom controls, indicated by the plus (+) and minus (-) sign. Aerials Maps are used for orientation, and we don't deviate from their utility. To view the aerial view of the current map location, you need to select an aerial year to display. World Digital Library Home Google Street View et sa couverture géographique très sélective La carte, mise à jour régulièrement par Google, permet de suivre la couverture de Street View dans le monde. Les zones qui apparaissent en bleu sur la carte ont déjà été explorées au moins une fois par Google avec le système Street View, qui affiche les images des rues que l'on peut parcourir en 3D à l'aide du célèbre petit bonhomme jaune. La couverture géographique est plutôt inégale : assez dense en Europe et en Amérique, plutôt clairsemée ailleurs, quasi absente en Afrique et en Asie centrale, globalement plus forte dans les territoires peuplés et les espaces urbanisés. Pour déterminer quand et où collecter des images de qualité, l'entreprise Google avertit sur le site qu'elle prend en compte de nombreux facteurs, notamment la météo et la densité de population des différentes zones. Il semble en vérité que cette sélection réponde à bien d'autres choix moins avouables ou plus intéressés. Les "pays riches" sont davantage représentés.
Kalakriti Archives: Rare maps reveal how India's cartography evolved over centuries In the 1580s, the adventurous son of a Dutch innkeeper found himself on a ship sailing from Lisbon to India. Newly employed by the archbishop of Goa, Jan Huygen van Linschoten was headed to the capital of the Estado da India Portuguesa—the Portuguese State of India—from where the European power almost completely controlled trade with the subcontinent. Decades after Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to the subcontinent, the Portuguese colonial empire kept its navigation intelligence a national secret and reaped the rewards, leaving the British and the Dutch desperate to learn how to traverse the long and treacherous journey themselves. But little did anyone know that the tide would soon turn and it would be van Linschoten who’d spark the beginning of the end of Portuguese hegemony in the East. Biologists use three types of evidence to deduce evolutionary connections: genetics, morphology, and geologic dating. (Behavior, normally a key part of evolutionary studies, can only be inferred in extinct species — for example, by examining the ecology in which the species flourished and the species adaptations for eating and locomotion.) Analyses of primate fossils and the genetic relatedness of living primates converge to the conclusion that humans and chimpanzees branched from a common ancestor about 7 million years ago. DNA recovered from several uncontaminated Neanderthalensis fossils indicated that modern humans and extinct neanderthals diverged about 400,000 years ago; but more recent studies show that they must have interbred within Europe or the Middle East since then.

It is recorded that Yuanmou man is the oldest hominoid in China and the oldest dynasty is Xia Dynasty. From the long history of China, there emerge many eminent people that have contributed a lot to the development of the whole country and to the enrichment of her history. Among them, there are emperors like Li Shimin (emperor Taizong of the Tang), philosophers like Confucius, great patriotic poets like Qu Yuan and so on. Il ne viendrait pas à l'idée de grand monde de jouer avec un tableau de données statistiques. Et pourtant, c'est bien en jouant, en manipulant les chiffres par soi-même, qu'il est plus facile de comprendre et d'apprendre. L'Insee vient de publier le millésime 2015 des données de population, issues du recensement. L'Insee publie également une étude plus élaborée : Du Nord au Sud, les mouvements naturels et migratoires opposent les départements. Le dernier article se distingue par une analyse plus poussée, illustrée par des cartographies avec une identité visuelle forte. The march aims to bring together women across diverse backgrounds and send a bold message to the new administration that they will not be ignored or have their rights stomped on. People carried signs with calls for gender equality and anti-Trump statements, though the rally's organizers have insisted the demonstration is more pro-women than anti-Trump. These stunning and soon to be iconic photos show what it was like to be there. We'll be updating this post as more photos come in.
Population Estimation Service » Gridded Population of the World (GPW), v4 Population Estimation Service The Population Estimation Service is a Web-based service for estimating population totals and related statistics within a user-defined region. It enables users of a wide variety of map clients and tools to quickly obtain estimates of the number of people residing in specific areas without having to download and analyze large amounts of spatial data. The pes-v2 service accepts polygons that define areas of interest, and a string which selects a year from the set of 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 or 2020 then returns population totals, land area, quality measures, and basic parametric statistics for the requested polygons based on data from SEDAC's Gridded Population of the World version 4 (GPWv4) dataset. If no year is specified the default is to provide results for the year 2015. Access SEDAC provides a web app to access the Population Estimation Service. Population Estimator Web App
