We’re destroying our kids — for nothing: Too much homework, too many tests, too much needless pressure My own awakening to the toxicity of the achievement race came the way it does to many parents: via years of trying to keep up with it. I sensed the problem in my home before I could name it. My daughters, Shelby and Jamey, were in middle school, and Zakary was in third grade. They were still children, in the essential sense of the word. They still played hide-and-seek, treasured their American Girl dolls, and relied on me to make their meals. But their lives had mutated into an adult-like state of busyness that gave our home the air of a corporate command center.
The Best MOOC Provider: A Review of Coursera, Udacity and Edx - SkilledUp.com Since the MOOC phenomenon took off two years ago, numerous providers have emerged that students might try out, including Canvas and NovoED in the US, Open2Study in Australia, FutureLearn in the UK and iversity in Germany. And it’s important to note that the history of MOOCs pre-dates any of these platforms, having first started when individual teachers experimented with opening the doors to all comers. But starting in 2012, three organizations — Udacity, edX and Coursera — started to dominate conversations about MOOCs. These “big three” have the largest catalogs of courses, and they are where most students interested in MOOCs still start their experience. Those three have kept growing — and changing — as they figure out new ways to attract students. For example, all three have made significant changes to their business models.

As a leader, learning to beat procrastination will make you and your team more productive, more often. We all procrastinate occasionally, but chronic procrastinators put off almost everything they have to do. According to Joseph Ferrari, a psychology professor at DePaul University in Chicago, and author of Still Procrastinating? The No Regrets Guide to Getting It Done (Wiley, 2010), about 20 percent of the global population can be classified as chronic procrastinators.
Japanese Designers Create Nameless Paints to Revolutionize How Children Learn about Colors Design duo Ima Moteki is determined to revolutionize how young children address the colors of the rainbow. To help get kids' creative juices flowing, Nameless Paints was designed to represent colors without labels. Instead of giving each shade a specific name, various circles represent primary colors that were blended to make the color at hand. The size of the circle also portrays the specific proportions that were used. “By not assigning names to the colors we want to expand the definition of what a color can be, and the various shades they can create by mixing them,” explains Yusuke Imai, who makes up half the design team with Ayami Moteki.
The Best Web Tools For English Language Learners (In Other Words, The Ones My Students Regularly Use) I received a comment from reader Mark, who says he loves all “The Best…” lists, but would like to hear my top recommendations sometimes. Of course, I have posted The Best Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced English Language Learner Sites, but even that is a pretty lengthy one. So, I thought I’d begin a running list here of posts where I have described (and future additions will describe) the Web 2.0 tools that I regularly use with my English Language Learners.
Python vs. Java: Udacity Instructor Weighs In On Programming Languages Python, a programming language named not after a snake species but a 1970s British television comedy sketch, is gaining popularity in colleges across the US. In a recent article, ComputerWorld reported that “Python has surpassed Java as the top language used to introduce U.S. students to programming.” The article goes on to suggest that majority of top computer science departments in the US now use Python to teach coding. As a teacher who has introduced programming to thousands of students, I must say that I am thrilled with this development.
