We love geometry | Designblog. Geometry appeals to us. When I was very young, I remember playing with wooden squares, circles and triangles, trying to find the right hole for them. Apparently, we learn to recognize geometry’s basic shapes from an early age. Not only is it one of the oldest mathematical sciences, it provides practical knowledge to interpret size, volume and relative position of figures in all kinds of situations. Through the axioms of geometry, measurements can be reduced to a simple set of lines, making our world a very synoptic place and providing us with a feeling of – why not – security and intelligent understanding. For artists, geometry served as a convenient tool for translating the natural world onto a two dimensional canvas. However, in the beginning of the 20th century, the straightforward, non-objective character of geometric shapes started to play a main role in art.

During the 20-year history of the web, despite the radical improvements in computers and display technologies, fonts and type layout for the screen have remained almost unchanged. Change is coming, though. In fact, it’s already here, and you may have started noticing that some websites seem to be expanding their repertoire. The ability to add web fonts to any site is going to completely change the way you view design on the web. While the new trends in web typography are not just about the availability of new typefaces—in parallel to the rise of web fonts, web browsers have been adding new font and text styles—the lack of typefaces on the web undoubtedly has been the greatest obstacle.
A Brief History of Web Typography Ever since Tim Berners-Lee made his first web page in 1990, designers have been dependent on the fonts available on the computer of the person viewing their work. Herbert Matter. Herbert Matter worked with a number of famous designers and artists during his career including Fernand Léger, Le Courbusier, Charles and Ray Eames, Derberny & Peignot, A.M. Cassandre and Alexey Brodovitch. Matter was a master of using photomontage, color and typography in an expressive manner, transcending the boundaries between art and design.
