Would philosophy help when my father died? – Julian Baggini. I’m dealing with the death of my father the way I deal with most things: by thinking, and processing those thoughts through writing, fingers to keyboard. Given my philosophical bent, these thoughts wander from his particular death to mortality in general. That might strike you as cold, excessively rational, analytic. But the only rule about grief is that there are no rules. Reactions to death cannot be neatly divided between the normal or abnormal, appropriate and inappropriate, right and wrong. We muddle through death as we muddle through life, each scrambling in the dark for a way through. At times like these, philosophers are of limited use because when they have talked about dying they have tended to focus on what it means for the one who dies.

A much more useful philosophy would help us to prepare for the deaths of others. If death comes at the end of a long illness, most would say it is easier to face, even if nothing can fully prepare you for the day when it finally comes. Death. Corgi Blogs. Rock. Classic Rock. Blogs I follow. 25 Documentaries Everybody Should Watch. Sans Soleil This is not your average documentary. It is a fleeting memory, a sudden remembrance of times long past, a meditation on time and culture, a touch of an emotional diary. We follow the eyes of a world traveller who makes sharp observations and tries to convey them to his friend. We never learn who they are and where they came from, and this is perhaps a subtle point the documentary wants to make. The narrator’s voice switches from Japanese to German to English to French, thereby embodying the language of the places visited. By observing the cultural kaleidoscope of our planet, the eye we follow seems to shape shift its way around and conveys to us, the viewer, that ‘what life is’ depends on where and when you are.

Sit down, cover yourself in a blanket and sip on a hot cup of coca and join the collaborative dream called Sans Soleil. In January of 2011 we started posting free short stories we thought might be of interest to Baen readers. The first stories were "Space Hero" by Patrick Lundrigan, the winner of the 2010 Jim Baen Memorial Short Story Contest, and "Tanya, Princess of Elves," by Larry Correia, author of Monster Hunter International and set in that universe. As new stories are made available, they will be posted on the main page, then added to this book (to save the Baen Barflies the trouble of doing it themselves). This is our compilation of short stories for 2019. As is usual with such copyrighted material from Baen, the contents may be copied and shared but NOT sold.

The Intelligence of Dogs – The LIST. 3 May Stanley Coren (born 1942) is a psychology professor and neuropsychological researcher who has become best known to the general public for a series of books regarding the intelligence, mental abilities and history of dogs.

Through television shows and media coverage that has been broadcast in Canada and the United States as well as overseas, he has become popular with dog owners, while continuing research and instruction in psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to S. Coren, author of “The Intelligence of Dogs”, there are three types of dog intelligence: Adaptive Intelligence (learning and problem-solving ability). And, I personally think he’s brilliant. Methodology The author used “understanding of new commands” and “obey first command” as his standards of intelligence.

The First Sentence Is a Handshake. According to science fiction writer William Gibson, a book's opening should be an inviting enigma to the reader—and a motivational benchmark for the writer. By Heart is a series in which authors share and discuss their all-time favorite passages in literature. See entries from Claire Messud, Jonathan Franzen, Amy Tan, Khaled Hosseini, and more. What happens in the first moments of a book? For William Gibson, author of The Peripheral, a kind of invitation is extended—and readers will or won’t feel what he calls “the click.”

But it’s not just about connecting with an audience. If Gibson is one of the most respected living authors of science fiction, it’s in part because of the spooky prescience of his imagined futures. Set in the near future, The Peripheral centers on a gamer named Flynn, who discovers that the virtual worlds she beta-tests may be more than fantasy. William Gibson is author of ten other novels—most recently, Zero History and Spook Country. Open Culture. Drugs Will Kill Your Friends - Rob Delaney. Comedian Rob Delaney reflects on his time in rehab. Three guys died when I was at the halfway house: Chris, Arturo, and Luke. They all died right after I left in pretty quick succession. Each one hurt like a motherfucker. I haven’t been to war, so I can’t comment on what that experience is like, but people who go through rehab or a halfway house walk a tough road together and not all of them make it. We knew we faced a powerful adversary that demanded respect. Chris was the first of my friends to die.

What’s funny to me is that I never really did drugs. Even when I was an abject alcoholic scumbag, years deep into my booze problem, riding the subway IN THE MORNING with visibly urine-soaked pants, I remained terrified of coke, even though, as we know, booze kills more people than every other drug combined and then multiplied. Chris, despite his rock-star looks, was quite down to earth and fun to be around.

The second friend to die was Arturo. Arturo was just a little cutie pie, really. Here’s proof that Alcoholics Anonymous is just as effective as professional psychotherapies. A physician named Robert Holbrook Smith had his last alcoholic drink 79 years ago this week. He and Bill Wilson, the friend with whom he had sobered up, thus anointed June 10 as the official founding date of the organization they created together: Alcoholics Anonymous. AA is the most commonly-sought source of help for problem drinking in the United States and many millions of people have participated in it and the other 12-step organizations it inspired around the world.

But does AA really work? For most of the 12-step fellowship’s existence, professionals in the addiction field held widely varying opinions of its value. To be sure, a large number of studies conducted from the 1950s through the 1980s showed that AA participation was correlated with decreases in problem drinking as well as improvements in mental health and quality of life. Studies such as these dramatically reduced the ranks of AA critics among scientists. Steep and Cheap: Columbia Expedition 1/2-Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's - $34.99 - 56% off. Tony Noble.
