Google ‘Offline Apps’ Let You Work Anywhere. BMW is testing a modified 5-Series car with Highly Automated Driving technology on a stretch of the autobahn in Germany. So far, the vehicle has achieved over 3000 miles without any driver involvement. The system uses radar, precise GPS maps, cameras and ultrasound to sense the position of the car and its surroundings, as well as other vehicles on the road and the layout up ahead. The prototype system can react to merging vehicles and allow them to join the traffic flow (even changing lanes if it needs to) all at speeds of up to 80 mph. BMW has stressed that the system has been designed for highway use only, and that the driver must still be constantly aware of the traffic and surroundings.
Eventually, BMW hopes to be designing cars that can brake, accelerate and pass other vehicles all on their own, while at the same time monitoring and adapting to traffic situations.
