Jeff Harris: a life in pictures. Since January 1, 1999, Jeff Harris has documented his life day-by-day, photo-by-photo—and he hasn’t let a debilitating bout with cancer stop the slideshow. It all began as a way of counting down to a new millennium.
Starting on Jan. 1, 1999, as a sort of Y2K project, Toronto photographer Jeff Harris thought it would be interesting to take a snap of himself, or his surroundings, every day for an entire year. “My grandmother was born in 1900,” says Harris. “She almost got to experience the 1800s and I thought maybe one day my grandchildren might want to know what it was like to live in the last year of the 20th century.”
Now, 13 years and 4,700-plus images later, Harris’ continuing project—which can be seen on his monthly updated website—offers an extensive, curated look at his life. In November 2008, Harris was diagnosed with a rare and serious form of cancer, leading to months of treatment and lifelong mobility issues. Jan. 1, 1999 There’s no end goal right now. Dec. 31, 2011.
