Change to a Sustainable Mindset

How to Change People’s Minds. People love to be right. Research indicates that we hate being wrong more so; but in a similar manner, we generally love to be right. But, being right is not, and shouldn’t be, the primary focus of critical thinking; rather, we use critical thinking to decide what to believe and what to do. However, critically thinking for the purpose of being right can be a positive thing, particularly in educational settings; that is, for educating others. article continues after advertisement I teach a master’s module on Critical Thinking for Leaders, wherein students are taught, for the purpose of enhancing their leadership skills in the context of Training and Education, how to both become better critical thinkers and empower their peers to do likewise. In a recent class with this cohort, one of my students asked a question that cut straight to the core of this line of thinking: How do we get others to change their minds?

Just being right isn’t enough. How to SHIFT Consumer Behaviors to be More Sustainable: A Literature Review and Guiding Framework - Katherine White, Rishad Habib, David J. Hardisty, 2019. Our behaviors as individual consumers are having unprecedented impacts on our natural environment (Stern 2000). Partly as a result of our consumption patterns, society and business are confronted with a confluence of factors—including environmental degradation, pollution, and climate change; increasing social inequity and poverty; and the growing need for renewable sources of energy—that point to a new way of doing business (Menon and Menon 1997).

In response, many companies are recognizing the need for a sustainable way of doing business, and across industries we see firms such as Interface Carpet, Unilever, Nike, and Starbucks embedding sustainability into the DNA of their brands (Hardcastle 2013). The current research provides a review of the literature regarding sustainable consumer behavior change and outlines a comprehensive psychological framework to guide researchers and practitioners in fostering sustainable behavior. Sustainability is in Your Mind — Being-Here. When we talk about sustainability, we are basically talking about protecting the natural environment, because of the harm that our industrial society has been doing for the last 200 years.

After the industrial revolution, people started thinking that they could take resources from Nature without any limit. We also started thinking that all the highly toxic wastes produced by machines and systems would not result in an important impact to the environment. Eventually, our society shaped our mind in a consumistic way, because we have been taught that whatever we buy and use will end up being a waste.

In order to think sustainable we need to shift from a perspective of “take-use-waste” to “borrow-use-replenish” mind-set. We need to understand that we can only borrow resources from Nature, use them as goods and then return them, without being harmful. Too many people still think that sustainability does not depend on our daily behave, while it is actually deeply embedded in our lifestyle. 5 Ways To Convince People To Actually Do Something About Climate Chang. There’s a fundamental paradox about climate change. Americans are actually less worried now about the climate than they were in 1999, despite thousands of new studies that keep piling up the evidence about the threat (plus more actual physical evidence occurring every day).

Scientists might be blanketing us in facts about impending disaster, but most people still aren’t taking action based on those facts–and some still don’t believe them. For climate activists, the usual response is to trumpet more facts. But maybe it’s time for a different approach. In a book called What We Think About When We Try Not To Think About Global Warming, Norwegian psychologist Per Espen Stoknes lays out a psychological approach for moving society to climate action. If a rational argument doesn’t work, maybe we need to just embrace the irrational human mind. “I believe good messaging is decisive to a working democracy,” Stoknes says. 1. 2. Messages can also focus on personal and more immediate opportunities. 6 things we learned about changing people's minds on climate - Institute on the Environment. About 3 in 10 people in the U.S. reject that the Earth is warming, according to a recent poll.

How can they be convinced otherwise? Our April 20 Frontiers in the Environment presenter addressed that very question. Renowned climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe, director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University and CEO of climate consulting firm ATMOS Research, has taken on a second calling: communicating climate change to people who don’t think it’s real. Talk about a tough task. Here are six key insights Hayhoe shared in her talk: Understand how polarizing the issue of climate change is.

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.- The Buddha, quoted in the Dhammapada We can endlessly get lost in the complexity of sustainable development, but the key to transformation is simplicity itself. Don't take my word for it; just listen to leading politicians and business leaders. They recognise that at the core, all we really need to do to unlock the creativity and innovation that can turn us away from social and environmental disaster is to change our thoughts.

We can thank Einstein for popularising a key spiritual principle. He was quoted in quick succession by the prime minster of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Paul Polman, the CEO of Unilever, at the recent two-day global green growth forum (3GF) in Copenhagen. She was followed by Polman who picked on another of Einstein's quotes; that the very definition of insanity is do the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.
