We recognize that environmental degradation—now accelerated by climate change—threatens the existence of most species on the planet and deprives people of the most basic and universal human rights of all: the right to live free of conflict and injustice, free of want; the right to grow and learn and to someday pass along to future generations a world better than the one they inherited.

Americans are actually less worried now about the climate than they were in 1999, despite thousands of new studies that keep piling up the evidence about the threat (plus more actual physical evidence occurring every day). Scientists might be blanketing us in facts about impending disaster, but most people still aren’t taking action based on those facts–and some still don’t believe them.

For climate activists, the usual response is to trumpet more facts. But maybe it’s time for a different approach. In a book called What We Think About When We Try Not To Think About Global Warming, Norwegian psychologist Per Espen Stoknes lays out a psychological approach for moving society to climate action.

IEE – Imaginative Ecological Education

If ecological understanding is developed through first hand experiences in the natural world, as a number of environmental educators claim, then urban settings can only offer opportunities for second hand, vicarious experiences. Although the extent to which such second hand experiences can help develop ecological understanding has not been specifically researched, it appears that the ‘emotional significance’ of the natural world and certain ideas associated with it can be grasped.

There are “500 Ways to Enrich Your Family's Health & Happiness,” as stated on the cover. There are ideas in this book for all ages, from infant to adult. The premise of the book is that we live in a society that has grown away from nature, that we are suffering from what the author has coined “nature-deficit disorder.” The book is full of facts that support the idea that nature is beneficial to humans by relieving stress, anxiety, and depression; helping increase concentration and assisting with ADHD symptoms in children; improving mental and physical health; and aiding creativity and learning. Having been a Forest School Leader for about six years it was great to come across a book that gives some wonderfully creative ideas that can be used in a school setting or within a Playgroup.

It offers a wide range of activities aimed at various age groups that are simple to make and do.It will inspire those who have not experienced or had the opportunity to enjoy forest school to create some lovely things with their children.I would also recommend this book to parents, especially for the summer holidays a great way of entertaining your children! It's got some great ideas for outdoor activities, some of which such as the Scavenger hunt or wand making, could work in any outdoor space, no need for access to trees or woods. Some of the ideas would work best with young children, but others can work for all ages - as my 20 year old son has demonstrated, regressing to his 10 year old self trying out some of the topics.
