Is Gene Therapy Worth It? Undefined A Web Quest Investigation of Gene Therapy Cancer Treatments IntroductionTask Process Resources and RolesEvaluation Conclusion Teacher Page Introduction: On September 17, 1999, eighteen year old Jesse Gelsinger died from a disastrous accident during a gene therapy trial. Suffering from OTC, ornithine transcarbamylase, deficiency, Jesse had been anxious to volunteer for the treatment. Victims of OTC deficiency lack a gene coding for the enzyme which breaks down nitrogen, thus resulting in the accumulation of such toxic substances as ammonia.

Since Jesse's death, the field of gene therapy has been scrutinized and criticized for the failure. Back to top Task: A hospital board needs to make a decision about whether or not to approve the administration of gene therapy treatments for cancer patients. For this reason, an advisory committee is established to investigate the concerns and desires of these groups of individuals.

Active learning. Active learning is a model of instruction that focuses the responsibility of learning on learners. It was popularized in the 1990s by its appearance on the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) report (Bonwell & Eison 1991).

In this report they discuss a variety of methodologies for promoting "active learning". They cite literature which indicates that to learn, students must do more than just listen: They must read, write, discuss, or be engaged in solving problems. It relates to the three learning domains referred to as knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA), and that this taxonomy of learning behaviours can be thought of as "the goals of the learning process" (Bloom, 1956). In particular, students must engage in such higher-order thinking tasks as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.[1] Active learning engages students in two aspects – doing things and thinking about the things they are doing (Bonwell and Eison, 1991). Phoebe — pedagogic planner. LDSE. Using digital technologies to support teachersin designing effective technology-enhanced learning (TEL). We are working with practising teachers to research, and co-construct, an interactive Learning Design Support Environment (the Learning Designer) to scaffold teachers’ decision-making from basic planning to creative TEL design. Through this iterative research-design process we hope to address the above issues and build the means by which the teaching community can collaborate further on how best to deploy TEL. We aim to lower the TEL threshold so that the majority of teachers can engage with it in a way that draws on good practice by others and is informed by the findings of pedagogical research, thereby optimising the benefits to their learners.
