Boost for grassroots education. Kristen A. Graham, Inquirer Staff Writer Posted: Monday, August 17, 2015, 1:07 AM Five years ago, EdCamp was a seed of an idea, 10 Philadelphia-area educators in a room attempting to make traditional teacher training more meaningful and democratic. On Monday, the teachers' work - which has already been hailed as an international professional learning phenomenon - takes the spotlight. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is scheduled to announce a $2 million grant to the EdCamp Foundation. EdCamp specializes in "unconferences" - training sessions where participants dream up the discussion topics, attend only the sessions they're interested in, and serve as the experts they are, leading sessions in their area of interest. "Part of the power of EdCamp is that it says to teachers not, 'You're doing it wrong, therefore, kids aren't succeeding.' Last year, 225 EdCamps were held around the world, each independently organized, with the EdCamp foundation providing assistance as necessary.

About the Course Gamification is the application of digital game design techniques to non-game contexts, such as business, education, and social impact challenges.
Video games are the dominant entertainment form of modern times because they powerfully motivate behavior. Game mechanics can be applied outside the immersive environments of games themselves, to create engaging experiences as well as assign rewards and recognition. Over the past few years, gamification adoption has skyrocketed. Companies use game thinking for employee motivation in human resources, team building, productivity enhancement, training, health and wellness, sustainability, and innovation. Marketers gamify their programs to engage customers. Organizations apply gamification to motivate crowdsourcing participants. Game thinking means more than dropping in badges and leaderboards to make an activity fun or addicting.

Edu All-Stars | Podcasts with the Difference Makers in Education. Students Assessing Me | Teaching Nonsense. About a week ago, Annabelle Howard, someone I follow on Google+, wrote a post about allowing your students to assess you as a teacher. The post and discussion that followed can be found here. I thought this would be great since, now that my district will be using GAFE, this could be done easily and often through Forms. Here is a link to what I came up with. I wanted to keep it simple and quick for students to complete. The questions I asked were: NameWhat am I doing in class that you like or that is helping you learn math? (Tell me at least 1 thing)What am I doing in class that you DON’T like or ISN’T helping you learn math?
After I was finished, I laughed at the double standard. I’ve already had a great learning experience just from making the assessment. Like this: Like Loading... Education Blogs: Teach100. As New Jersey moves toward new online state tests in 2014-15, the state Department of Education has been advising teachers to integrate technology into everyday learning so students will be comfortable taking the tests. "They're past the cool app stage and want to get down to business," he said. Denmark Schools Media Center. #EdCampMADWI: Pulling up the Stakes.
I've been to EdCamp before and have been blown away each time. Such was the case at my most recent EdCamp experience at #EdCampMadWI this past Saturday. With a sunny, snowy Sunday and some calming tea, it's time to pull up the stakes on #EdCampMadWI and choose a next course of action: Get one in my own backyard. So, I did some homework. I read How to EdCamp. I networked with EdCamp organizers. I volunteered to help out. Geographical Disclosure: I reside on the "westside" of Wisconsin, in a rural area with 100 miles between major university cities and dozens of little burghs, villages and yes, coulees and dug-ways dotted in between.
The whole EdCamp movement to offer organic, learner-driven professional development to educators still boggles my mind, but that's what makes it so appealing. The beautiful part? Reflecting on EdcampKC. EdCampKC 2012. From BLAH... to TAH-DAH! Go "EdCamping" for Your Staff's Next PD Day! Inspired by Knapp Elementary Principal, Joe Mazza (@Joe_Mazza) and the increasing numbers of "edcamp un-conferences" happening around the world, we shifted the "professional learning paradigm" at our high school recently. True confession: I have not attended an EdCamp myself. I have followed several of them through the Twitter hash tag world, however, and I have officially registered for my first - #EdCampKC in November. For a traditional professional development junkie like myself, I consider it a substantial change for me and our school. It was strange to release the control for our staff's learning almost completely. I referred to Mr. 1. 2. 3.

EdcampCT 2012 was held this past Friday at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT. Hats off to the planning/hosting team for another great event. And, of course, hats off to the food service team for the awesome lunch and those incredible homemade potato chips! For those who don't know, Edcamp is a great series of free, unconferences for educators. The Edcamp model is unique in that attendees set the agenda the morning of the conference and the sessions are not led by one person, but are rather a collaboration of both the facilitator and attendees.
It is a great way to learn, share, and connect with other educators. The first session I attended was "Twitter as a PLN". This year, I facilitated a discussion on Evernote and it's use in education. The conversations continued during lunch and I made a bunch of notes and connections while eating. The next session was on layered curriculum, a way of differentiating for different levels of students. Related: Flier Black.pdf. For Edcamp Newbies. Yesterday, with the support of SGEI and Kean University, where I work, I hosted edcamp Common Core. The idea was to gather NJ educators to discuss a common theme. Here’s what I heard from attendees in the morning before we shared opening remarks in the auditorium: Why weren’t the sessions posted ahead of time? Where are the experts? I did not come prepared to talk.I just came to listen.Don’t you have any handouts for us? Am I going to learn anything? I was nervous for a bit in the morning before the session board filled.
Once we all got into the auditorium I went over some basic notes on the facility and then reviewed the concepts behind an unconference. I ended with these rules for the day: Listen. Here’s what I heard at the share-out at the end of the day and from e-mails sent to me that evening: I wanted to take a moment to express my enjoyment at today’s sessions! It’s not that I didn’t attempt to educate attendees on what the day would be like. Like this: Like Loading... Leadership in Technology is Really Leadership in Learning - EdTech Researcher. No. They.
