A Social Media Reality Check - Online Fundraising, Advocacy, and Social Media - frogloop. Fear of Missing Out If you work in Communications, escaping the latest hype around social media can be tough. You may even find yourself obsessing about it and have a condition called FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) because you are not posting or monitoring the chat on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. The U.S. Population Does Not Spend Their Day Using Social Media Guess how much of the U.S. population (comprised of 311,446,341 people) uses social media these days?

YouTube: 19.94% of the U.S population is on YouTube. MySpace: 1.19% of the U.S. population is on MySpace. Social Media: Just One Slice Of The Pie While these stats are not terrible (in particular Facebooks and Youtube’s) it does demonstrate that the world does not revolve around social media for millions of people in the United States. More Resources: Jeffbullas. Facebook marketing is permeating websites, blogs and other social networking properties. You only have to go to Slideshare, YouTube and notice that the ability to share with your Facebook friends is built in, either next to the content or in the settings. These Facebook marketing tips and tactics will help you build your Facebook Fan page by acquiring more likes, engaging with your audience and provide ideas to keep them coming back for more. 1.

Critical Thinking in 140c: How SM can make us Smarter. Many (including Malcolm Gladwell, or the latest to fall, the NYT’s Bill Keller) claim it’s impossible to use social media to drive deep, meaningful learning, especially for more complex topics. After all, how much can be said in a 140-character tweet? Like many in the chat and blogging communities – on this topic?
I’ll beg to differ. For example, after a successful 10-month series in 2010 on Organization Culture (+7k page views), I’ve started a new deep dive on Critical Thinking in March, with a similar multi-month research agenda. And, while content in that new stream may expand this conversation, for now, I’d like to “take it up a level” and talk about how we use social media tools to drive the conversation – including tips and tools that facilitate collaborative research and learning. For the WEDS 5/25 1pET #SMCHAT, let’s focus on techniques for “heavy lifting” using social media: Q1.
If there’s interest in Critical Thinking at the deeper level, we can definitely circle back on it. Jeffbullas. Last week, I did a quick tutorial on how you can convert your Facebook profile to a business fan page. Subsequently, I was flooded with queries on various aspects of the conversion process, the pros and cons of opting in/out and the considerations before you decide to do it. Therefore, I decided to do another post to clear the air about the Facebook profile to fan page migration. Now, Later or Never?
The most important consideration is that you should be 100% sure that you either want to do it or not. There’s no looking back, no Undo feature so it’s better to be sure rather than sorry. If you decide not to go the conversion route for now, you can always reconsider your decision at a later stage and use the migration tool to take the plunge. Pros Businesses which already maintain Facebook Fan Pages would be well aware of the benefits involved. Comply with rules – Facebook says profiles are for individuals and aren’t best suited to business needs. Cons. Jeffbullas. In the corner of my office sits a dull dedicated technology device called a “Fax Machine”, its real name is in fact “Facsimile”.
It’s presence is tolerated in case we need to communicate when Facebook fails, the SMS feature on my phone implodes or the email goes down. It occasionally does make whirring noises and prints off a page from a marketing company or business that hasn’t heard of email or the internet. I am sure that if I asked my teenage children what a fax machine was I would get a quizzical look with a raised eyebrow. They were popular in the mid 1980′s and were a “must have” for every office and even came with the amazing ability to print in color. Marketers were quick to use them to bypass snail mail with calls to action and produce leads for sales teams. Email replaced fax machines as the Internet became ubiquitous. Facebook’s chat and instant messaging is quite often used instead.
Email is not going away any time soon but things “are a changing” What do you think? 355inShare. A Social Media Love Story, Starring The Four Seasons | tcapushnpull.com. I love finding social media love stories. It warms my heart to hear about a brand and a customer making a sincere connection through the web and starting a beautiful relationship of mutual advocacy forever and ever, Amen. Here’s my new favorite story: Thomas travels a lot for work. Thomas tweets Four Seasons. Four Seasons tweets Thomas back. Thomas thinks this is very cool. Thomas is completely impressed and blogs about his experience, even suggesting Four Seasons to his readers. This story isn’t just warm and fuzzy – it offers tons of lessons for those of us who manage social media for brands.
They recognized that social doesn’t just mean digital. They met him where he was at – maximizing the WOM. They built a relationship with an influencer. As Thomas said in his blog post, “People talk to people, not brands.” Lady Gaga Passes Oprah to Nab World's #1 Celebrity Crown. Celebrity brandcasting Posted by Shirley Brady on May 18, 2011 07:00 PM On the eve of her new album release, Lady Gaga tops Forbes' 2011 list of top entertainers — defined as the most powerful people in entertainment based on Forbes' calculation of their earnings (pretax income from May 1, 2010-May 1, 2011) and media clout (print, TV, radio, online and especially social media).
The artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta is Forbes' new #1, notching $90 million in earnings in the past year, while the in-transition Oprah was #2 with $290 million but far less social media and digital clout. View the new top 10 below, and the complete 2011 list here. Below, see why Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber (the youngest to make Forbes' list, he debuts at #3), U2, Elton John, Tiger Woods, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Simon Cowell and LeBron James made the top ten in this year's celeb rankings.
Google Rolls Out Social Search Globally. Google will roll out its somewhat controversial Social Search feature to 19 more languages next week, the company announced on its official blog. Launched in October 2009, Social Search is a feature that combines regular search results with publicly available data created by your friends' social media activities. Your "friends" are quite loosely defined and include people in your Google Talk friends list, your Google Contacts, people you're following on Buzz and Google Reader and other networks you've linked from your Google profile or Google Account. Google can also find your friends on public networks such as Twitter and Facebook and gather the data from their public connections as well.
The feature was recently the subject of controversy, as Facebook hired a PR company to push negative stories about Social Search in the press. Technology News: Cameras and Social Media in the Courts. Core Content SEO Tools: Keyword Glossary & Editorial Plan. It’s funny when you work in an industry for a long time that the basic things you create to make life a little easier can save others who are new to the field, a lot of time. I’ve done a few webinars and speaking events in the past few months where one of the tools suggested was a Keyword Glossary (spreadsheet) for managing category and page level optimization, keyword mapping and competitor keyword mapping.
Another tool was an Editorial Plan that documents articles/blog posts, media, promotion and planned re-purposing. There are basic building blocks for becoming more efficient with search engine optimization tasks, but I’ve received a lot of requests for them. I thought they might be useful to our readers to use for inspiration to create their own and maybe even modify and mashup into something better.
Below are screen shots which you can click to see larger versions. Basic Keyword Glossary Basic Content Plan for a Blog The best tool or format depends on your own needs and applications. Study: One Third of Businesses Don't Profit from Groupon Deal. A third of businesses don't make money from promotions on socially charged buying site Groupon, says a new study. Consumers who use the deal-of-the-day web site don't make return visits to the businesses offering discounts, don't spend much and don't tip well, says the study from Rice University's Jesse H.
Jones Graduate School of Business. "I think these findings show that social promotion companies need to better balance consumer appeal with positive outcomes for the small businesses offering them," study author Utpal Dholakia, an associate professor of marketing at the business school, said in a statement. "Right now, these deals are tilted too far in consumers' favor. " Dholakia surveyed 150 businesses in 19 U.S. cities and 13 product categories that ran and completed Groupon promotions between June 2009 and August 2010.
Though some 40 percent of businesses said they wouldn't do a social promotion again, two thirds of the businesses did earn profits with Groupon. Which TV Shows are the Most Social? The relationship between social media and television has begun to intensify, and why not? The two seem like a match made in heaven. What could possibly provide a better outlet for discussing your favorite TV shows and connecting with not only other fans but people actually involved with the making of the shows? Twitter has made it a point as of late to partner with certain television events to promote the use of their service as the main means of discussion. And in turn, networks get a chance to promote their content through one of the top social networks in the world. So which TV shows do you buzz about most on Facebook and Twitter? Comedy Central has been an early adopter of the hashtag promotions, first partnering with Twitter for the roast of Donald Trump, and more recently using the promoted trend #comedyawards for its first ever show of the same name, honoring comedians across all media forms.
But what are the most social shows on TV? This whole study begs a bigger question. 5 Ways Social Media Has Changed Marketing Campaigns. "Social media engagement. " It’s a phrase that generates a lot of buzz, but what does it actually mean? And, more importantly, why does it matter to companies that are integrating social media into their PR and marketing strategies? We turned to some of the leading communication experts to discover the importance of sparking online engagement and how this new focus has forced PR, marketing and advertising campaigns to evolve. Defining Social Media Engagement Ask five people to define engagement, and you’ll likely receive five different answers. Liz Hawks, SVP and global co-chair of FH Moms Practice, explained it like this: “Engagement is speaking with her (in this case, Mom) where she is, when she is looking for info and in the way she is looking for it.”
Rob Clark, Edelman’s director of insights and measurement, suggests thinking about engagement as the step from attention to action. 5 Ways Social Media Engagement Enhances Communication Campaigns 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Twitter Users Are Way Bolder Than Facebook Users [INFOGRAPHIC] Have you ever noticed that the phrase "Follow me on Twitter" seems a lot more common than "Friend me on Facebook"?
Alterian and Sevans Strategy decided to look into this phenomenon. The two tracked 3.3 million such "asks" in March by running keyword searches on various platforms including Flickr, Blogger, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr and Twitter. The researchers found a whopping 95.9% of the requests related to Twitter. The most popular come-on: "Follow me. " Most of the time, this message was relayed on Twitter. Why? Although you might assume that the only people who would read the message "follow me" would be people who already follow you, Sarah Evans, president of Sevans Strategy, points out that the message can also be retweeted and found in searches.
Meanwhile, research shows that people are a lot less bold on Facebook, which only accounted for 2.2% of asks. Men and women were also pretty much equally likely to ask, though men were a lot bolder on Facebook. Mexico City To Send Earthquake Warnings Via Social Media. Mexico City plans to start warning about earthquakes through mobile text messages and social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter. The new alert system should launch by September 19, a date marking anniversary of the 8.1-magnitude Mexico City earthquake that killed about 10,000 people in 1985.
Currently, Mexico City employs an earthquake warning system with radio warnings and sirens that don't always go off, and some citizens report they cannot hear them. Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, a likely contender in the 2012 presidential election, likes the idea for its simplicity. "I think we will have it in place soon, because it is not too complex," he said.
His administration is talking to several service providers to put the alert system in place. Twitter has shown to be a valuable tool during disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis on numerous occasions. [via Reuters, AP] 5 Ways to Use Twitter to Connect With Local Customers.
