Recently I have embarked on trying to understand better the underlying ideology and world view of the Silicon Valley tech scene, and how this is impacting our daily lives through the products and services they create. My mission is still far from complete and reading suggestions are more than welcome. On Twitter, Brian Schroer guided me to a few books and to this inspiring 2010 NYU doctoral dissertation by Alice E. Marwick , currently an Assistant Professor in Fordham University’s Department of Communication and Media Studies. Previously she was a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research New England in the Social Media Collective (and therefore a frequent co-author with danah boyd), and a visiting researcher at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School.
Social media’s neoliberal world view (and how it affects us all)
A tongue-in-cheek infographic is comparing social media sites with dinosaurs, reflecting each site’s characteristics in one of the now-extinct creatures. The infographic by Najeeb Khan for Uvavi.com that’s published on Visual.ly pairs Reddit with pterodactyl, teams up stegosaurus with Stumbleupon, likens triceratops to Twitter, links up LinkedIn with brachiosaurus, matches tyrannosaurus rex with Facebook, and couples up Google+ with velociraptor. "This annoying little creature tends to be everywhere," the infographic says about Google+/velociraptor.

Twitter, Facebook, and Airtime Are Waging War Against The Internet’s Stupidity
The Web is overrun with dumb hashtags, chart-topping fart apps, and guys just waiting to show you their d*cks. But with this week’s launch of Twitter’s Tailored Trends , Facebook’s App Center , and Airtime’s safety net , some tech companies are fighting back. If you can’t get people to act smarter, at least you can hide their idiocy, and that’s what each of these products does. But can we make the Internet smarter and safer with without whitewashing away differing opinions and locking ourselves in an echochamber? As the the web becomes more mainstream and widely available, it’s expanding from a domain of intellectuals into a dirty mirror of society at large.

Luis Suarez , l'un des social business évangélistes d'IBM, n’utilise plus l’email depuis 4 ans maintenant. Lors de Lotusphere Paris en mars, il est revenu sur le pourquoi et le comment de cette décision.
Les réseaux sociaux à la place du mail ?
En réponse aux théses de Richard Barbrook concernant la « noblesse du numérique » et l’idéologie (libérale) « californienne » ; Bifo qui a vécu directement les évêments liés à l’aventure des radios libres (Radio Alice) rétablit les faits et la signification instituante du travail militant de Félix Guattari. À travers la figure des « techno-nomades », il montre comment la pensée rhizomatique est seule en capacité de rendre compte des transformations actuelles dans l’univers des réseaux. Il met l’emphase sur le « paradigme esthétique » seul à même de rendre compte et de lutter contre la profondeur des atteintes contemporaines à la sensibilité.
