The rise of WhatsApp and other OTT messaging apps, such as Viber, LINE and WeChat, has been putting pressure on operator SMS revenue — and the addition of voice could have a similar impact on voice services.

Voice Messages has been launched for all platforms and allows users to add recorded messages to WhatsApp conversations. There is no limit to the length of the messages, and a microphone image shows when they have been heard by recipients. WhatsApp uses mobile data or Wi-Fi connections to send messages, meaning users don’t need to use their SMS allowance when having conversations. The total figure was 27 billion messages in June, when WhatsApp reached 250 million users.

The Dirty Secret of Apps: Many Go Bust - WSJ.com - Aurora. ComScore: Smartphone Penetration In Europe’s Big-5 Markets Now At 55%, Samsung Is The One To Beat. Europe’s mobile market has reached a tipping point: the top-five markets in the region collectively have a majority of consumers using smartphones, according to the latest numbers from comScore, and that proportion only continues to grow.

France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK are now reporting a 55% smartphone penetration, or 131.5 million users, according to comScore’s MobiLens research — an online survey of a “nationally representative” sample of mobile subscribers aged 13 and up. The numbers cover the last three months ending October 31, 2012. ComScore tells me that the first time European users tipped into a smartphone majority was in July. But while Apple has continued to hold on to its lead in the biggest market among them, the UK, the tides that have seen Android become the most dominant platform have also put Samsung on to a strong trajectory.

It looks like it will soon overtake Apple for pole position in the UK — as it already has across all of Europe. In software testing, 'perception is reality' is really a myth - Aurora. The Internet isn’t lacking for sites and services where people can post their comments and thoughts, but Andrew Sider, co-founder and CEO of a startup called Bunch, argues that there’s still something missing: “How do we connect with people, not around friends, not around social networks, but around a topic that they care about deeply?”
