Practical Reasons Why Businesses Need Social Media. Jacob Morgan with Chess Media Group wrote a short but sweet post in mid-March. His approach to convincing potential clients on adopting social media goes like this: “If I told you that many of your customers and prospects interacted and communicated in the social space would you invest in having a presence there?” “What if I told you that you would never know you made a single direct dollar off of any of those customers and prospects in the social space, but you knew that they were still there, would you still invest?”

Now step in the executive’s shoes for a moment and imagine how you would react. Would you say, “Yeah, even still, I refuse to go where my customers are.” Of course you wouldn’t and that is why this approach is effective. There is a sense of urgency within both small and medium sized businesses, but when we look at large companies, they are publishing hugely effective social media campaigns.

The mobile augmented reality space has really been heating up lately (check out our recent feature on the top 6 AR apps). Today one of the front-runners, Austrian software company Mobilizy, launched a new version of their mobile augmented reality browser Wikitude for Google's Android platform.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, augmented reality refers to the sci-fi-like display of real time digital data superimposed on top of the world around you, typically via your mobile phone's camera. You point the camera at an object or location and get a resulting display of information related to those things or places. The most interesting update to Mobilizy's mobile augmented reality offering is the relaunch and full integration of the Wikitude.me platform with the browser.

That focus on user-generated content separates Wikitude from one of its major rivals, Layar, who is betting on outside developers creating geotagged "layers" of data for its browser. HOW TO: Measure Social Media ROI. Olivier Blanchard Basics Of Social Media Roi Defining Clear Goals As a standard formula, ROI is pretty basic, ROI = (X - Y) / Y, where X is your final value and Y is your starting value.

In other words, if you invest $5 and get back $20, your ROI is (20 - 5) / 5 = 3 times your initial investment. In the financial sense, ROI is measured purely in the context of dollars and cents, however, the principles can really apply to any type of investment — monetary or not. Having concrete goals and concrete baselines is crucial to calculating your return on investment. Once you have your goals defined, you need to gauge the baseline for your levels before starting or changing your social media strategy. Metrics Tools Although ROI ≠ metrics, traditional web metrics like traffic counts, number of comments, Twitter followers, Facebook fans, etc. are an important component when calculating your ROI. The trick is to not rely solely on the numbers, but on what the numbers end up leading to. Nya arenor gör myndighet social. Flera myndigheter börjar försiktigt använda sig av olika sociala medier. The social web and search results support each other and are inexorably linked. It goes beyond a mere passive connection, the two create an active, virtuous cycle growing more powerful daily. I mocked up a quick version of what I view the cycle as: The link between search and social media only becomes tighter as the engines and the social web innovate and integrate together in ways which make both more valuable. From the standpoint of staying relevant and at the edge, the engines and the social web need each other.

They are working together for the benefit of users, but site owners can benefit too by creating a strategy embracing the connection. Social Software Building Blocks / nForm / Customer Insight, Stra. There are lots of definitions of social software out there, ranging from the clinical (“software that enables people to connect through computer-mediated communication”) to the pragmatic (“stuff that gets spammed”). While doing research for a recent workshop, I came across a useful list of seven social software elements. These seven building blocks–identity, presence, relationships, conversations, groups, reputation and sharing–provide a good functional definition for social software. They’re also a solid foundation for thinking about how social software works. The original list was assembled by Matt Webb (who was expanding on a list created by Stewart Butterfield).

Here’s a brief definition of each element: Not every social software system has all of these, but most of them have three or more. For the workshop, I borrowed an idea from Peter Morville’s user experience honeycomb and created a social software honeycomb. More reading.
