The UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development has just launched the first of a series of “explainer videos” designed to help people understand the basics of the 2030 Agenda and the individual Sustainable Development Goals. Additional videos will cover various related topics, and be released in the coming months in partnership with different UN agencies. The first video, “Understanding the Dimensions of Sustainable Development,” offers a broad introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals.

SDGs in the library – Informative Flights. Many schools, and particularly those following the IB (International Baccalaureate) framework are attempting to incorporate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their teaching and learning.

The library can play an important role in supporting this through curation and discoverability. Our G6 students used the SDGs to focus their research during their PYP Exhibition Project. I’d been meaning for the longest time to curate a list of books around the SDGs and this was the ideal opportunity. In curating the list there were actually two phases.

In the first I was looking for books that would act as provocations and allow students to form a feeling of empathy and identification with the goal. So that everyone could see the images clearly, instead of a read aloud, I projected a YouTube video of the books being read. Over the last few years, IFLA has been actively involved with the creation of the UN 2030 Agenda, advocating for the inclusion of access to information, safeguarding of cultural heritage, universal literacy, and access to information and communication technologies (ICT) in the framework. In August 2015, after more than three years of negotiations and intense involvement from many stakeholders, including IFLA, the Member States of the United Nations agreed to a final version of the post-2015 Development Agenda – now known as the 2030 Agenda.
