Northern Ireland murals have had a long tradition of reflecting troubled history - but sophisticated street art is fast becoming a way of publicising its present. Belfast's latest generation of young street artists are now leading the way putting the city on the map as part of a movement which hails back to the Alternative Ulster 'punk rock' era of the 1970s. he city is now the canvas for big names in the field such as Emic (Eoin McGinn) whose artwork has been brought to global attention, along with Dean Kane (aka Visual Waste) and Marian Noone (aka Friz), to name but a few.

Such is the popularity of the work, street art tours have been established, particularly centred around the Cathedral Quarter. From the playful 'Ulster Says Yeoo', a pun on the famous 'Ulster Says No' unionist political slogan to global musical artists like Kanye West, Belfast for the past decade has been an ever-changing street gallery. Adam Turkington, creative producer of Seedhead Arts which runs a major street arts festival, said Belfast has a, "body of world-class work", insisting it is the "best city in Ireland for street art". But in recent years, paramilitary and sectarian artwork has made way for a new form of expression that doesn't pander to divisions and hopes to speak to each and everyone of us.
