Researchers revolutionize closed captioning. (PhysOrg.com) -- Ever since closed video captioning was developed in the 1970s, it hasn't changed much.

Researchers revolutionize closed captioning

The words spoken by the characters or narrators scroll along at the bottom of the screen, enabling hearing impaired viewers - or all viewers when the sound is off - to follow along. Now a team of researchers from China and Singapore has developed a new closed captioning approach in which the text appears in translucent talk bubbles next to the speaker. The new approach offers several advantages for improving the viewing experience for the more than 66 million people around the world who have hearing impairments. The researchers, Meng Wang from the Hefei University of Technology in China and colleagues, won the Best Paper Award for their work on the new closed captioning method from the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Multimedia Conference in October 2010.

Moreover, all of these features can be automatically implemented without any manual intervention. The Oh-My-God Particle. Six new isotopes of the superheavy elements discovered

Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has detected six isotopes, never seen before, of the superheavy elements 104 through 114. Starting with the creation of a new isotope of the yet-to-be-named element 114, the researchers observed successive emissions of alpha particles that yielded new isotopes of copernicium (element 112), darmstadtium (element 110), hassium (element 108), seaborgium (element 106), and rutherfordium (element 104). Rutherfordium ended the chain when it decayed by spontaneous fission. List of particles. This is a list of the different types of particles found or believed to exist in the whole of the universe.

List of particles

For individual lists of the different particles, see the individual pages given below. Elementary particles[edit] Fermions[edit] Fermions are one of the two fundamental classes of particles, the other being bosons. Fermion particles are described by Fermi–Dirac statistics and have quantum numbers described by the Pauli exclusion principle. Fermions have half-integer spin; for all known elementary fermions this is 1⁄2. Quarks[edit] Leptons[edit] Bosons[edit]
